Larry Sparks Bluegrass Singer, Career
Sparks taught himself to play the guitar when he was quite young. He was influenced by artists such as Wayne Raney, Stanley Brothers, Tommy Sutton, and Paul “Moon” Mullins. Despite the fact that he had played in country music and rock bands while he was in high school, his career in Bluegrass began when he joined the Stanley Brothers in 1964.
Around then, Sparks was playing in a neighborhood band in Middletown known as Ohio: “Irvin MackIntosh and His Band” and a companion of his, banjo player Wilbur Hall, was familiar with Moon Mullins – who had quite recently landed to Middletown – and Hall enlightened Mullins concerning Larry. Mullins, who knew the Stanley Brothers, prescribed Sparks to them and he was procured after a tryout. A broad visit pursued and he recorded without precedent for 1965 for a little name in Dayton, Ohio.
In late 1966, Carter Stanley of the Stanley Brothers passed away and Ralph Stanley needed a guitarist to supplant Carter. “Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys” comprised of Ralph Stanley-banjo, Larry Sparks-guitar, Curly Ray Cline-fiddle, and Melvin Goins-bass. Sparkles moved to Clintwood, Virginia, and got hitched. With Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks recorded the first forms of present-day twang gauges including “I Only Exist”, “Tenant farmer’s Son”, and “Going Up Home To Live in Green Pastures”.
In 1969, Sparks left the “Clinch Mountain Boys”, and came up with the “Lonesome Ramblers” and started recording for Pine Tree Records. The main variant of the “Ramblers” contained Larry Sparks, David Cox, Lloyd Hensley, Joe Isaacs, and Larry’s sister Bernice Sparks. After Pine Tree Records he went to Old Homestead Records and afterward to Starday Records before moving to the twang mark Rebel Records in 1977.
Throughout the years, his band has experienced various staff changes. Banjo player and tenor singer Dave Evans has been one of the “Ramblers” most well-known members. In 2005 Sparks performed at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival with the Lonesome Ramblers.
