Greenwood was born to his father, Eugene Greenwood, and his mother, Bliss Greenwood, on October 27, 1942, in South Gate, California, United States. After his parents divorced, he moved to Sacramento to the farm of his maternal grandparents, where he grew up. Greenwood started singing in church at the age of seven, and in 1960, he secretly ran away to Reno, Nevada, with his first wife, Edna.

Two years after eloping to Reno, Greenwood launched his first band, The Apollos. In 1969, he entered the Chester Smith Band and had his first TV appearance, and shortly later, he collaborated with Del Reeves, a country musician. Greenwood relocated back to Las Vegas, where he operated as a singer at night and as a blackjack dealer during the day after the band dissolved in the 1970s.

  • Greenwood’s rise to fame started in 1979, when Larry McFaden, the bandleader and bassist for Mel Tillis, discovered him in Reno, Nevada.
