The book covers the Hicks case also contains a well-detailed explanation of the Bush administration’s detainee policy in the War on Terror and the Australian government’s cooperation.
In 2009 her essay, On Doubt, was published as part of MUP’s series Little Books on Big Themes which has featured Germaine Greer, David Malouf, Blanche d’Alpuget, and Barrie Kosky.
In 2018 she released her third book ‘No Ordinary Day’ which is about trauma, resilience, faith, grief, and how people accommodate the unexpected loss. It’s a moving and sensitive account of the profound and irreversible shifts in our inner life when tragedy occurs.
Leigh Sales No Ordinary Day
Leigh wrote No Ordinary Day after her own deal which happened in 2014 from having a uterine rupture, her eldest son being diagnosed with hand tremor, and turmoil in her marriage. She also references what she saw every day on her show and this made her realize she needed to get a sense of security back which she did through writing.
The book is about trauma, resilience, faith, grief, and how people accommodate unexpected loss. It’s a moving and sensitive account of the profound and irreversible shifts in our inner life when tragedy occurs.
A number of the subjects had a double dose of tragedy, so stories of their resilience are particularly impressive. Diver lost his wife in Thredbo and then his second wife to cancer. Juliet Darling lost her 26-year-old son after her partner Nick Waterlow was murdered. Louisa Hope, who had been diagnosed with MS, was caught up in the Lindt cafe siege.
Diver talks about how we develop a schema, or a set of beliefs, that we hold as certainties. These might include “good things happen to good people”; or “I’ve had my bad luck, now good things must happen”. The schema is one of the things that shatter when random tragedy strikes – particularly when it strikes twice.
Leigh Sales On Doubt
On Doubt is Leigh Sales’ second book which was published as part of MUP’s series Little Books on Big Themes which has featured Germaine Greer, David Malouf, Blanche d’Alpuget, and Barrie Kosky. The book is Sale’s classic personal essay which carries a message about the value of truth, scrutiny, and accountability—a much-needed, pocket-sized antidote to fake news.

Leigh Sales Religion
Leigh in her book describes herself as an agnostic and in her book ‘Any Ordinary Day’, she states that religion was a comfort to some of the subjects in her book, and on her part, she was initially skeptical about their beliefs.
“I viewed religion as a bit of a crutch. There’s no God and there’s only one life. When I listened to these people about how their faith had helped them, in one way I envied them. It was so patently comforting to them and it offered answers to a lot of questions.”
