Leland Vittert Biography

Leland Vittert is the America News anchor in Headquarters on Fox News Channel (FNC). He also fills in for hosts on Fox and Friends, America’s Newsroom, and Happening.

He studied and graduated at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He also attended the London School of Economics. He covered the Freddie Gray riots in Baltimore which was praised by many. He broke the news about the Baltimore mayor’s alleged stand-down orders for police, and had tense question-and-answer exchanges with lawmakers and public figures throughout the city.

In 2010, he began following the Arab Spring. He was one of the few reporters live on the ground in in 2011, in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on the night that Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian President left power. He traveled to Libya in the country’s first days revolution, where he reported on Muammar Gaddafi’s counterattack and later from the besieged city of Misurata.

In 2012, he covered the 2012 war between Israel and Hamas, Operation Pillar of Cloud. He has interviewed Muhammad al-Zawahiri, the brother of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, and a failed Palestinian suicide bomber. In 2014, he stayed in eastern Ukraine for a month as Russian-backed militias took over parts of the country.

He anchored the weekend news at KDVR-TV at FOX 31 in Denver, Colorado, he was a reporter for WFTV-TV (ABC 9) in Orlando, Florida. He also worked at other national news stations, including KNWA-TV (NBC 50) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, KATV-TV (ABC 7) in Little Rock, Arkansas, and WMTV-TV (NBC 15) in Madison, Wisconsin, before he joined FNC. He received Emmy nomination for clearing a police officer wrongly accused of rape.

Leland Vittert of Fox News Talks Death of Saudi Journalist

The disturbing and gruesome details about the slaying of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul shocked the nation this week.

A pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak published a lurid account of what it said was Khashoggi’s slaying. The newspaper said it reviewed an audio recording of Khashoggi’s murder in which Saudi Consul General Mohammed al-Otaibi could be heard telling those allegedly torturing Khashoggi: “Do this outside; you’re going to get me in trouble.” One of the torturers replied: “Shut up if you want to live when you return to (Saudi) Arabia.”

According to the account, Khashoggi was tortured and then dismembered while still alive. The Saudi who cut Khashoggi’s body up was advised to put on earphones and listen to music, according to the newspaper, which cited government security sources. The execution lasted seven minutes.

WIBC host Tony Katz spoke with Fox News host Leland Vittert Friday about the slaying and the implications for international relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Vittert: “Why did the Saudis think they could get away with killing someone in a foreign country so gruesomely and in such a brazen manner? And the question a lot of people are asking is why the U.S. should punish the Saudis, why is it our job? Because it is in the best interests of the United States for their to be some semblance of rules of how the game is played. How do we come to the Russians when they start killing people in the U.K. and other places? How do we go to the Iranians and tell them, ‘Hey, you can’t just whack whoever you want whenever you want?’ The lines would be pretty murky if you have something this brazen that you didn’t respond to.”
