Leon was raised in Cleveland and pursued his journalism career at Bowling Green State University. After graduating, Leon worked as a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. His journalism career was halted, though, when he was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War in 1966. When he returned from the Army two years later, he went back to Bowling Green before launching his professional broadcast career at WTOL in Toledo.
Then, fate stepped in. If you know Leon Bibb, you know the significance of his ‘hitchhiker’ story. In short, it goes like this:
On a freezing cold day, Leon was driving a station vehicle when he saw a hitchhiker walking alongside the road. He felt compelled to pull over and give the stranger a ride. It just so happened that the man was a student at the University of Toledo and his girlfriend’s mother worked at the NBC affiliate in Columbus.
The hitchhiker gave Leon the woman’s number. She was familiar with his work and interested in chatting with him. Three weeks later, he was on the air at the station WCM

Following graduation, he worked as a newspaper reporter at The Plain Dealer. After a year at WTOL-TV in Toledo, he accepted a new position at WCMH-TV in Columbus. Prior to joining WEWS-TV, Bibb worked at WKYC-TV as the weekend News Anchor and News Reporter. In 1986, he became Primary News Anchor for the Monday through Friday newscasts.
From 1995–2017 Bibb anchored various newscasts at WEWS (most recently weekdays at noon) as well as hosted a Sunday morning show named Kaleidoscope, which focuses on urban issues in Cleveland.

Back on Aug 06, 2018, it was reported that Leon Bibb was returning to the station where his broadcasting career in Cleveland began.WKYC Channel 3 announced Monday that the Broadcasting Hall of Famer was joining the station to do special reports and commentary that “put a spotlight on people and places in Northeast Ohio.” Bibb, 73, would make his debut that tonight on the 6 p.m. newscast.
Bibb came to WKYC via WCMH-TV 4 in Columbus back in 1979. In 1986, he was promoted to anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. He was the first African-American to hold that position in Cleveland, after becoming the first in Ohio to do so ten years earlier in Columbus.
In 1995, the iconic newsman, whose eloquent style of writing and presentation could turn any news story into poetry, moved to WEWS Channel 5 where he remained until last year. He retired from anchoring and reporting last August but stayed on as host of the public affairs program “Kaleidoscope” and a commentator. Bibb is a product of Glenville High School who got his start as a journalist at The Plain Dealer in the late 1960s. He also served in Vietnam, where he was awarded a Bronze Star.
