Leonard Lauder Collection
The Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection consists of 83 works of art by the four pioneering Cubists which include Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, and Picasso, ranging in date from the year 1906 to 1924. Leonard is a major art collector. He began by buying Art Deco postcards when he was six, yet his particular focus, rather than on American artists, is on works.
Leonard also collects Klimt. Much of his art comes from some of the world’s most celebrated collections, including those of Gertrude Stein, the Swiss banker Raoul La Roche, and the British art historian Douglas Cooper. In the autumn, of 2012, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston opened an exhibition of 700 of his postcards which was a tiny part of the promised gift he made to the museum of 120,000 postcards, that is The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection.
In an interview in The New York, Lauder expounded on how postcards turned him into a collector, and how these “mini-masterpieces” remained his lifelong pursuit to the point where his late wife, Evelyn, called the collection his “mistress.”
Lauder’s interest in postcards made him acquainted with one of the owners of the Gotham Book Mart, a Manhattan bookstore, as he sought to help the Gotham re-establish its presence in the city when the owner had already sold its long-ago building and needed a new space. Lauder bought a building at 16 East 46th Street together with a partner, letting the building’s storefront space to Gotham.
Later, Gotham fell behind on rent, eventually which resulted in Lauder and his partner filing for eviction. In a much-publicized closure of the bookstore, the New York City Marshal then auctioned the store’s inventory, which was bought in a lot by Lauder together with his partner to some protest from many other independent booksellers including collectors who were present at the proceedings and hoping to purchase some of the bibliophilic treasures
Leonard Lauder BCRF
Mrs. Lauder, together with Dr. Norton and her husband, Leonard, committed then and there to change that believing that the research was the way forward, and founded BCRF on the belief that funding was the only obstacle standing between breast cancer and its cure.
Back then, Mrs. Lauder was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. She then chose to channel her experience into action. A model of resolve, Mrs. Lauder took it upon herself in 1989 to help to establish a state-of-the-art breast and diagnostic center at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she was also a board member.
The facility, which is well known today as the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center, set a new nationwide standard for cancer care offering the most up-to-date prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services under one roof.

- I’m not a builder of buildings, I’m a builder of collections.
- A visionary is someone who can see the future, or thinks he sees the future. In my case, I use it and it comes outright. That doesn’t come from daydreams or dreams, but it comes from knowing the market and knowing the world and knowing people really well, and knowing where they’re going to be tomorrow.
- I love that works of art are printed so that anyone can buy them. The variety of what they put on little postcards astounds me.
- If tomorrow all of America were to become paternalistic, we would beat the Japanese every day of the week. I think that the concept of accusing someone of running a paternalistic company, that’s not an accusation. One should compliment someone on that.
- The best advice I ever got came from my mother, Estee Lauder: She believed that if you had something good to say, you should put it in writing. But if you had something bad to say, you should tell the person to his or her face.
- My mother always used to say when picking up a product, ‘Would you give this to the Duchess of Windsor?’ Well, that’s lovely. But the Duchess of Windsor is dead.
