When Letoya moved on to high school she chose to attend the school of arts, a decision that her folks whole-heartedly supported. It was in the eighth grade that Letoya became part of a music group called ‘s’kool Girlz, a band that consisted of Letoya, her two sisters and her cousin.
She did drama for about three years and then decided to move on to contemporary music. After being in her first year of contemporary music she was moved up, so basically she did Gr 10 and 11 in one year. In that same year she took the honors of Best pianist as well as Best vocalist, and was bestowed with full colors in music.
‘S’kool Girlz kept the girls busy from morning till night. Music had always been a passion, but landing a job as a VJ on Channel O hadn’t even crossed her mind. An agent called up one day to tell her about Channel O auditions.

Singing and dancing for the youth of South Africa and giving their parents a lot to look forward to, with ‘Pampiri’ and other songs from their album and their high energy performances! Through their music and their HIV/AIDS Awareness work, s’Kool Girlz were officially asked by ex-president, Thabo Mbeki, to join the South African government and the world in the fight against HIV/AIDS, adding ‘HIV/AIDS Ambassador’, to this young star’s already big profile.
Two years later, s’Kool Girlz released their second album, called ‘The Party Goes On’, with a slightly more mature feel to it, but still appealing to the youth. With songs like ‘Nomathemba’ and ‘Never Leave You’, the industry grew to respect this group and in all the nine provinces, the girls were welcomed with open arms.
After the sudden and unexpected death of their mom, Agnes Makhene, the girls pretty much put a stop to live performances and recordings, using the time to grieve and heal.
Later on, Letoya started recording tracks with other artists, featuring on albums such as ‘Time’ by Hugh Masekela, with the track ‘Old Folks’ which also featured the star studded Kwaito group, Trompies. Not forgetting the hit song, ‘Laku Shon’ Ilanga’, which she recorded with the band, The Brand New Second Hands. Letoya then went on to feature on Blondie Makhene’s album, ‘Sthunywa Sam’.

Letoya Makhene: We don’t accept killer ‘sangoma’, it is the work of a witch
Generations: The Legacy actress Letoya Makhene is so over traditional healers being painted with the same brush and wants the world to know that her people are “healers” not killers.
Letoya joined the wave of outrage since the disappearance of two children in Witbank, who were apparently killed by a traditional healer and their body parts used in a muti ritual.
Two bodies believed to be those of a little girl and her one-year-old nephew were discovered last month. The deaths have led to conversations around muti and traditional healers. The little girl was living with albinism and TimesLIVE reported that her nephew was mistaken for another child from the same household who also has albinism.
Letoya, who is a traditional healer, took to social media this week to share her outrage at the killings and said the sangoma allegedly involved in the killings was not part of the healing craft.
“I am not ok! This is not ok! I can’t even hold back my tears. These are babies! My people are healers. My people restore lives. My people are God’s children. This work was not done by iSangoma or iNyanga. This is the work of umthakathi (a witch).”
The star, who runs a practice in Johannesburg, was rumoured to have quit her work as a healer after moving her practice last year. She took to social media at the time to set the record straight.
“So apparently I’ve quit my work as a traditional healer? Yes. I did put practicing on hold for a brief while, while moving my practice. My practice is up and running again and I’ve found nothing but joy in the healing work that I’ve done even with my more complex cases.”
