2017 triathlon season
Sanders had one of his best career seasons in 2017, winning the World Championships for ITU Long Distance Triathlon in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. Except 70.3 St. George, where he finished second to Alistair Brownlee, Sander’s won all but one 70.3 race he had entered. Sanders led the Kona, Hawaii Ironman World Championship to mile 23 of the marathon before Patrick Lange died. Lionel will stick to finishing second.
2018 triathlon season
Sanders continued his success in 2018, winning most of his races except Oceanside 70.3, where he lost to Jan Frodeno. Sanders won the Challenge Family “The Cup” again in June against Sebastian Kienle in a 3:44 time before winning Mont-Tremblant 70.3. Sanders finished 2nd at Ironman Mont-Tremblant in full-distance running and 29th at the Ironman World Championships.
