Liz Walker WBZ
Walker was the evening news anchor at WBZ-TV starting in 1981. Her career had started in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas serving as the public affairs director. On-air assignments in Denver (KMGH-TV) and San Francisco (KRON-TV) followed prior to her moving to Boston and WBZ in 1980. She was reportedly making $500,000 a year In 1987. In that year her intended pregnancy was publicly declared.
This generated some complaints as some local religious leaders felt that she was both unmarried and shameless making her a poor role model for teenagers. After doing a story on the Lost Boys of Sudan, she started to re-evaluate her life. Eventually, this led to her enrolling at the Harvard Divinity School in September 2001. In January 2002, she produced an independent documentary on Sudan entitled In the Lion’s Mouth.”

Political analyst Jon Keller talked to Liz Walker, former WBZ-TV anchor and current senior pastor at Roxbury Presbyterian Church. Walker said in her church community “everybody knows somebody who is suffering from this.”
Walker said inequities to access to healthcare and other resources lead to the disparity.
“It is devastating in our community,” Walker said. “I hope and pray that this will be a turning point or a game-changer. Some of these inequities have been around since America started. So we have to figure out how to make the playing field more level. People in my community are really suffering.”
Walker said in challenging times such as these, many people turn to faith.
“It’s challenged us and it’s strengthened us. The big issue for people of faith is what’s going on. We’re trying to figure out what’s God saying? What does this mean spiritually? To some extent, it’s a frightening experience. But faith is a step in the dark. This is darkness,” Walker said. “We are in a valley of no control right now. All you can control is how you move through the valley.”
