Mark Wallengren Christmas Tree Recipe
Nothing beats the fresh smell of pine. That’s the reason we get a live tree for Christmas, right? But it can be difficult to keep it so fresh for the entire season. Here’s the Wallengren Family Christmas Tree Recipe and I’ve been doing this for 20 years…works every time.
1. go to your favorite lot and pick out your perfect tree. Make sure they give you a fresh cut of at least four inches. (Make sure you have four extra inches cut off) And bring it home!
2. Boil a gallon of water (or just a large kitchen pot). Add a quarter cup of Karo syrup and a half teaspoon of bleach to the boiling water.
3. CAREFULLY pour the mixture in to the tree stand with the tree in place. (I actually have a tree funnel that helps me not burn myself!)
4. Let the tree stand overnight. (Don’t decorate yet!)
5. Check level of water. If it doesn’t look like the tree has absorbed any water, then the tree is dead and take it back to the lot to exchange for a new one. (Which I have done before!) If the tree takes water, then continue steps 2-4 until you are finished with Christmas!
Here’s why: When you cut a tree, it sends sap to the wound and it hardens, making it difficult to absorb any water at all. So you want an extra four inches cut off to make a fresh wound so the bark is nice and soft. The Karo syrup feeds the tree the sugar it needs (like the sap used to heal the wound/cut you made). Pouring the boiling water keeps the bark soft and able to absorb the mixture! So you will have a fresh and healthy tree all month long.

Mark Wallengren Fired
After the show ended, she went down the hall to program director Stella Schwartz’s office to see about music for the next show. Two Clear Channel executives – Michael Martin and Steve Regis – asked her to come in and sit down. She was told she was being let go.
Wallengren told listeners the next morning, “Yesterday after we left the air at ten o’clock … I got a text from Kim that said, ‘I’ve been let go.’ Feb. 3, 1986 to Nov. 29, 2007. It’s no longer going to be called the Mark & Kim Show.”
Amidon was among several Clear Channel employees terminated in Los Angeles. The casualties included midday personality Mike Sakellarides, who had been with the station since the “soft hits” format started in 1982. And Mike Nolan, who had been providing airborne traffic reports in morning and afternoon drive. At Clear Channel’s AirWatch news and traffic service, these on-air reporters lost their jobs: Mike Taylor, Barbara Brooks, Jim Curran, Walt Jackson, Alan LaGreen and Sharon Reardon.
“I am humbled from the outpouring of love from colleagues, friends, family and most of all the ‘Mark and Kim’ listeners who have called and e-mailed KOST 103 on how upset they are by the recent turn of events,” Amidon said in an interview.
“The listeners literally have taken my voice away with their heartfelt concern. I truly have a case of laryngitis for this first time in my life, and I am finding that so ironic now having being silenced on the Southern California airwaves.
“I have seen so many things change in radio in my 27 years of being on the air in Los Angeles, but even I do not pretend to understand Clear Channel management at this time. I am sure anyone would have trouble understanding the logic of blowing up a successful morning show with high ratings. It does seem to me clearly a statement of just how far away from the creative end the head honchos in radio now reside.
“Our contract was up July 2, and they gave us an extension to Dec 2 so that we could have this big 25th anniversary celebration party at Disneyland. Looking back. I think they knew all along that they were going to shake things up and just wanted to let us get through that. I suppose that was it.
“I knew there was trouble last week when my agent, George Hiltzik, said (Clear Channel executive) Michael Martin wasn’t returning his calls. George just went through this in New York and other markets where Clear Channel had downsized a number of people. So, I was not surprised.
“(Clear Channel L.A. market manager) Greg Ashlock later called me to apologize for being out of town and not being there to let me go in person. He was also very complimentary of my role in radio and for especially being a role model for women. I thought that was very nice and I do understand the need to expand the Internet and all they want to spend money on, but I still can’t believe blowing up a show with high numbers,” she said.
The KOST morning show ranked in the Top 10, but Amidon said among English speaking adults the show was No. 2, and added that she was paid bonuses for those higher ratings.
Ashlock said Amidon’s position will be replaced, but not until early next year. Wallengren, who now continues solo from 6 a.m. to noon weekdays, did not respond to a request for comment.
Amidon, a single mother to Beverly, 12, and Hayden, 9, said she loves “staying at home and doing the Mom thing.” Her family includes a golden retriever named Kiwi, 2, and a kitty named Leo.
Amidon estimated the “Mark & Kim” show did about 10 visits to Orange County each year.
Reflecting on the changes, she said, “It clearly isn’t about radio anymore, it’s all about the Internet and putting revenue into developing a way to increase the bottom line in that fashion. And to me that is a sad day, for as great as the Internet is, it will never capture the heart of the human experience that you feel in someone’s voice. It just isn’t possible.
“I am grateful for all the great adventures Mark and I went on together over the years, creating our own kind of magic on the air. We have truly left no stone unturned when it comes to morning show antics. I am so happy if by some chance we were able to entertain listeners and make them laugh on their way to work!
“I’m upset that they really did fire me so they could hire another woman at one-fifth of my salary. Mark, especially, was so proud of the fact that we were the first equally billed, equally paid male/female morning show in the country. We were not the ‘man star’ and ‘girl sidekick’ ever. We were the longest paired morning show in the country as well.
“And yet when push comes to shove, it’s ‘we can hire another woman cheaper’ and that is sad to me. KOST 103 is 60 percent listened to by women, and these women need to know that when they hear another woman on the air with Mark, she is hired at a cheaper rate. By listening now you are supporting the downsizing of women forever more with this group of managers, (and it is) a step back in radio some 20 years.
“I already have a job offer, but want some time off. Really, I have been working since I was 16 and need a break, especially with the holidays. I’ll be back, I just have that feeling,” she said.
Amidon said she is going to take a month off in Hawaii. Listeners who want to e-mail her can e-mail me at the address below and it will be forwarded to her.
Ashlock said the company’s move from public to private ownership was not a consideration. In comments posted on www.laradio.com, Ashlock said, “Change is uncomfortable, but sometimes necessary to move forward. If we lived in a vacuum where everything could stay the same and no alterations or adaptations were necessary, then sign me up. Unfortunately, we don’t. Media usage has changed – so we’ve invested heavily into developing our online and other nonterrestrial assets. Media measurement has changed – so we’ve made shift changes to coincide with that evolution.
“Kim Amidon, Mike Sakellarides and Mike Nolan enjoyed an incredible ride of success for 20-plus years. There are no words that can express the gratitude they deserve. As such, they will forever be intertwined with the fabric of KOST. There should be a celebration and tribute to their unprecedented longevity in a very competitive industry.”
