Coach James Borrego mentioned Marvin Williams as a guy he’s expecting to have a leadership role.
“Tony “Parker” was right there and Kemba “Walker” was right there,” Borrego said about leadership roles. “But Marvin Williams has done this for a number of years. He’s a pro and he understands what I need out of him. We spent a lot of this summer talking about that, but I need other leaders to step up as well.”
Earlier this month, the Hornets openly said they’re going to look to their young guys more, so Miles Bridges is a heavy favorite to start at the four. Williams could still find a path for minutes, and perhaps being a leader could get him to 24 minutes per game with some minutes next to Bridges. Williams is still only a deep-league option.
Marvin Williams has exercised his $15 million player option for the 2019-2020 season.
No surprise here, as Williams had already confirmed during his exit interview back in April that he intended to pick up his option. It was a no-brainer for Williams, as there was no way he’d see anything close to $15 million in annual salary as a free agent.
Marvin Williams confirmed during his exit interview that he intends to pick up his player option with the Hornets for the 2019-20 season.
Marvin Williams will soon be turned 32 years old, so this will be an easy decision for the former No. 2 overall pick, as there’s no way he’d command a $15 million annual salary on the open market. It’ll be interesting to see if Williams can retain his starting spot next year.
