During the next years, Kishimoto began loving Dragon Ball’s original creator Akira Toriyama, enjoying not just his series Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, yet in addition Dragon Quest, a series of role-playing video games for which Toriyama is the art designer. While he was unable to bear to purchase Weekly Shōnen Jump where the Dragon Ball manga was distributed, he followed the series thanks to a friend from school who had subscribed to the magazine. By high school Kishimoto began losing interest in the manga as he began playing baseball and basketball, sports he practiced at his school. Be that as it may, after observing a poster for the animated film Akira, Kishimoto got intrigued by the manner in which the representation was made and wished to mimic the series’ creator Katsuhiro Otomo’s style. Different series he appreciated reading are Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Ninku, and Ghost in the Shell.
During his last years of college at Kyushu Sangyo University, Kishimoto invested time drawing manga and went to an art college with hopes that he would turn into a manga artist. After entering college, he concluded he should try creating a Chanbara manga since Weekly Shōnen Jump had not distributed a title from that genre. Nonetheless, during that year, Kishimoto began reading Hiroaki Samura’s Blade of the Immortal and Nobuhiro Watsuki’s Rurouni Kenshin (the latter of which was distributed in Weekly Shonen Jump), which utilized the said genre.
