Mashirima’s career began at Daystar University as a News and program presenter announcing in both English and Kiswahili on the radio from May 2010 – May 2011 at 103.1 Shine FM where she also served as the station Manager.
From there she moved to KBC, where she filled in as an intern, for 7 weeks between May and June 2011. She was then called to QFM where she worked both as an intern and contracted newsreader for 6 months. There, she would also do stories for NTV on her off days.
During the fall of 2011, NTV hired her to fill in as an anchor/reporter where she got the opportunity to learn and grow before moving to KTN on Feb 4, 2013. At KTN she got a bigger opportunity to do long-form features, anchor and tell stories in Kiswahili which is her absolute passion.

In 2018, it was announced that Citizen TV’s Mashirima Kapombe was humiliated and embarrassed after she was mishandled by a male employee at the Panari Anga Sky Cinema.
It was said that she had visited the place to watch a movie, did not like how she was treated and took to Twitter to share her bad experience at the hands of the employee at the cinema.
“I’ve always thought of myself as brave, fearless. I would be saddened by stories of women assaulted by men in broad daylight as others watched and some filmed. Yesterday, that happened to me. At Panari Anga Sky Cinema. I reported and the manager on duty took over the case.
It felt a little better knowing there was somewhere, someone I could run to. But, the look on the man’s face even as the manager stepped in reminded me of how many remain silent because they would rather walk away and put it all behind them. I reported. Then walked away,” she tweeted.
After reporting the matter, Mashirima revealed that she walked away and the management later called to apologize, offering her free complimentary movie to make up for what happened.
