Pochettino then moved to RCD Espanyol in Spain for the 1994–95 season t the age of 22, as part of the intake of players accompanying the Catalans upon their return to La Liga. During his six-and-a-half years at the club, he established himself as an automatic first-team starter helping the club to the 2000 Copa del Rey conquest. By then, he had a reputation as a tough, uncompromising central defender.

Paris Saint-Germain

Late January 2001, Pochettino signed for Paris Saint-Germain FC. He was a regular starter during his stay and he moved to fellow Ligue 1 side FC Girondins de Bordeaux for the 2003–04 season. He later returned to Espanyol initially on loan before the move was made permanent midway through his first year. Pochettino continued to play for two-and-a-half more seasons and ended his career at age 34 with another domestic cup victory.

Mauricio Pochettino Coaching Career

Espanyol

Pochettino became Espanyol’s third coach in late January 2009, with the team being third from bottom of the table. He had a great task to save them from relegation. He had just recently completed his UEFA Pro Licence and had spent a short spell as the assistant manager to the ladies’ team but was otherwise untested as a coach.

His first match was at home with neighboring FC Barcelona, managed by Pep Guardiola, in the Spanish Cup.  His players were reluctant and only availed themselves of two training sessions prior to the game. Despite all that, his system of high pressing and one-on-one defensive cover yielded an unexpected 0–0 draw.

The team finished the season comfortably mid-table with their most significant result being a 2–1 victory in the league derby against Barcelona. That win was their first in the competition at the Camp Nou for 27 years on 28 September 2010. He agreed to a one-year extension at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat which ran until 30 June 2012 and in May the following year further renewed his contract until 2014.

However, on 26 November 2012, following a 0–2 home loss against Getafe CF that left the team in the last place with just nine points from 13 matches and with the manager complaining about the financial restrictions being placed upon him, his contract was terminated by mutual consent at the end of that month. Pochettino’s work had drew praise from commentators despite the lowly league position. He was beginning to display the characteristics that would inform his coaching at his other clubs.

Southampton

Pochettino was announced as the team manager of Premier League club Southampton on 18 January 2013. He was replacing Nigel Adkins, becoming the second Argentine manager in English football after Osvaldo Ardiles.

His first match in charge was five days later, which he registered a 0–0 draw against Everton at St Mary’s Stadium. On 9 February He recorded his first win, 3–1 at home over reigning champions Manchester City.

He led the Saints to notable victories against other top league clubs including a 3–1 home win over Liverpool and a 2–1 success against Chelsea also at St Mary’s. Pochettino, in his first full season at Southampton, led the team to an eighth-place finish, their highest league position since 2002–03. They also recorded recording their highest points tally since the Premier League began in 1992–93.

Tottenham

Pochettino was appointed head coach of Tottenham Hotspur on 27 May 2014, on a five-year contract. He became their tenth manager over a 12-year span. The following 28 January, the team reached the final of the League Cup following a 3–2 aggregate win over Sheffield United but were beaten 2–0 by Chelsea in the decisive game at Wembley Stadium.

In the domestic league, Pochettino’s first season was generally successful. The team ended in fifth-place finish. They also had a conversion of several young academy players into regular first-team players.

One of those graduates was Harry Kane, whom he put as starting striker at the expense of Spanish international Roberto Soldado. This gamble paid off as Kane and his teammates Dele Alli and Eric Dier were touted as the potential basis for the England squad at UEFA Euro 2016.

Tottenham was contesting to win the 2015-16 but on 2 May 2016, they drew 2–2 against Chelsea, handing the title to Leicester City. They nevertheless ended the season with their highest league finish since 1990. On 12 May 2016, Pochettino extended his contract till 2021.

Spurs began the 2016-17 season with a series of 12 unbeaten league matches that ended with a defeat away to Chelsea in late November.  In 2017 Spurs won the North London derby.  Spurs were unable to get past Chelsea’s lead in the league table. They finished the season in second place with 86 points, their highest ever points tally since the Premier League began.

This is Tottenham’s highest ranking in 54 years since the 1962–63 season. They also achieved their first unbeaten home run in 52 years since the 1964–65 season. Pochettino signed a new five-year contract to keep him at White Hart Lane until 2023 on 24 May 2018.
