Max Raabe Biography
Max Raabe is a German jazz singer who is widely known for being the founder and leader of the Palast Orchester. He formally studied music at the University of the Arts in Berlin and originally intended to become a singer for baritone operas. In 1985 he founded the Palast Orchestra along with eleven other students. Apart from retro album covers, Raabe frequently writes original songs and music, including film music.
Raabe and the orchestra have performed band-style covers of modern pop songs including songs by Britney Spears, Tom Jones, and Salt’n’Pepa in the 1920–1930s. In several films by German directors, such as Der Bewegte Mann, Werner Herzog’s Invincible in 2001, and Wenzel Storch’s Die Reise ins Glück in 2004, Raabe has also made several cameo appearances as a stereotypical 1920s and 1930s singer and entertainer.

Rise to Fame
In 1985 Raabe founded the Palast Orchestra along with eleven other students. The group initially used music arrangements that Raabe discovered on various flea markets. These arrangements were performed by the orchestra for a year without any public appearances or performances.
The orchestra appeared for the first time in public at the 1987 Berlin Theaterball, as a secondary activity in the lobby, but with such success that the crowd left the ballroom to hear the performance of the orchestra in the lobby. Raabe and the Palast Orchestra had a hit with his 1992 original, Schlager-styled song “Kein Schwein ruft mich an”a pop song in the 1920s style.
Raabe recorded a cabaret version of the song Oops!… I Did It Again,” with Palast Orchester for their album Super Hits. It was released in 2000.
