Callan began singing and dancing when he was still a young boy at the age of fifteen in a local night clubs. A few years later he traveled to New York and performed under the name of Mickey Calin. His big breakthrough came when starred in the films The BoyFriend (1954) & Catch Astar (1955).
At the age of 21, Callan auditioned for the role of Jerome Robbins of the ”Riff” in the master Broadway production of West Side Story (1957-1959. He was good enough and had a good personal triumph.
Nonetheless, in 1957 October, the studio reported interest in him. Callan’s talent was discovered by a talent scout Joyce Selznick. Selznick worked for Columbia Pictures, Columbia was a Youth talent organization. Callan signed a seven years contract in June 1958. He had been using the name ”Mickey Callin” but would use the original name ”Michael Callan”.
The role of Callan on Columbia Pictures at first produced prestige results by film They came to Cordura (1959) starring Gary Cooper. He gained more trust in Columbia Pictures. Therefore, Michael Callan was offered numerous projects including The Mountain Road, Let No Man Write My Epitaph, and The Flying Fontaines. (1959)
