Michael began his journalism career in 1966 after his college studies as a radio reporter. He proceeded to work at at KCGM in Columbia, Missouri, as a news director. He transferred to KFRU radio from where he was promoted from being an assistant news director to be a news director.

He served as a City Editor for The Columbia Daily Tribune between the Newscast. In 1970, Putney relocated to Washington, D.C from Midwest. There he worked for as a general arts writer for the first two years, then as general assignment reporter for the next five years and later as a national feature writer for The National Observer.

In 1976, he was promoted to bureau chief to Los Angeles from West Coast. In 1981, Michael began his broadcasting career on Television. He worked at WTVJ in Miami, where he investigated a wide range of stories however with a great focus on government and legislative issues.
