Michelle Hardwick wants Emmerdale wedding for Vanity
Michelle Hardwick would love to marry her girlfriend – but thinks it would be “even better” if her ‘Emmerdale’ character ties the knot with Charity Dingle.
The 42-year-old actress has embarked on a new relationship in real life after getting divorced from her long-term partner Rosie last year, and while she would love to tie knot to her significant other, she would prefer her alter-ego Vanessa Woodfield to wed Charity (Emma Atkins) in a “big soap wedding”.
She said: “Me and my partner are ridiculously in love and happy and it’s lovely. I’ve decided this time round to keep this relationship private. I have been divorced nearly a year now and we split up way before that. But would I get married again? Yes. I don’t even hesitate with that.
“What would be even better would be for Charity and Vanessa to have a big soap wedding. Who knows if they will get that far though?”
Michelle admits being a lesbian in real life has given her an “advantage” of playing vet Vanessa, who has come out as gay on the soap, and she feels “proud” to have inspired viewers to do the same.
She said: “Perhaps being a lesbian did give me an advantage playing this role because I do understand it and what Vanessa is going through, I cared and was invested in the storyline because it was personal to me.
“When you do hear the stories of the young girls who are sharing their coming-out stories it does make you feel proud that you’ve helped them with that.”
The former ‘The Royal’ actress and Emma – whose characters are known as Vanity – are “thrilled” to be helping out so many fans to speak about being gay.
She added to the Daily Star newspaper: “We have such a huge following online, we’re thrilled.
“I did a gig recently as part of the Emmerdale band and loads of #Vanity fans travelled from all over the country just to thank us.
“They told me that they were proud to be out and that they are who they are now because of this story. Before they’d never been able to talk about being gay and they’d all met on Twitter while watching the show and they formed a WhatsApp group. It’s like we’ve formed a little community which is so great.”
But Michelle may not get her happy ever after on ‘Emmerdale’ because Charity is set to open up about her past in tonight’s (10.04.18) one-hour special, and the revelations will leave Vanessa shocked, which could put their relationship in doubt.
