Klis went to college (Murray University) to be a sports broadcaster. He was so good at it that he became a sports writer. After college, Klis worked as a gas station and a convenient store clerk, a weed eater, a snow shoveler, a part-time sports announcer for a now-defunct Aurora radio station, a part-time sportswriter for the Oswego Ledger-Sentinel, an umpire, basketball referee and player-coach of the Shuler’s Drugstore slo-pitch softball team.
Klis threw all his jobs away and moved from Illinois to Colorado Springs in October 1984, where one of his first jobs was scrubbing pots and pans at the Air Force Academy’s freshman cafeteria. apart from the Denver Post, Klis also shares his insight on Denver radio station 102.3-FM The Ticket, where he makes guest appearances regularly.

When Mike Klis moved to Colorado and found work as a gas station attendant, he called radio play-by-play for Colorado Springs Christian High School basketball and then wrote about the game afterward for the Gazette Telegraph for extra money. Double-dip, $25 times two. Except the radio station rarely paid him.
When the Gazette offered Mike a full-time job in 1987 at about the same time the sports radio station changed to a Spanish format, he became a sports writer.
Mike covered preps. One of his first leads, from a high school basketball game, was: “The Thrilla in Manila was nothing compared to the Thrilla in Sierra.” He was not fired but he believes his next assignment was a wrestling match.
Mike covered the Colorado College Tigers (4-33-1 in his first hockey season) and Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox. He covered the Colorado Buffaloes and — starting Aug. 17, 1990, when Gov. Roy Romer called a meeting at the downtown Denver Westin Hotel for prospective owners – the Colorado Rockies.
