Pence was born one of the six children to Nancy Jane (nee Cawley) and Edward Joseph Pence Jr. Mike’s parents also ran a group of gas stations. His father, Edward Joseph Pence Jr., served in the U.S. Army when th Korean War was going on. Edward earned a Bronze Star in 1953. Pence displays the portrait in his office all together with the commendation letter and the bronze star.
The family was based on the Irish Catholic Democrats’ religion. His name, Michael Richard, is from his grandfather Richard Michael Cawley. Michael Cawley emigrated from County Sigo, Ireland to the United States. He passed through Ellis Island. Mike Pence won the U.S House of Representatives seat in 2000. He won the seat in Indiana’s 2nd congressional district after David M. McIntosh run for governor of Indiana. Pence used the same slogan he used while on radio, describing himself as ” a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order”. He was among the Te Party Caucus party. Working as a house representative he had first opposed George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act in 2001.
During the house elections, Mike won four consecutive times. The Esquire magazine listed Pence as one of the best 10 members of Congress in 2008.
