Amid the regular hustle and bustle of busy family life is a new sense of peace. A nagging question in the back of her mind for years was finally answered, “I was in agony,” Basara said.
While pregnant 14 years ago with her daughter Lindsey, Basara suffered a deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, which is a potentially life-threatening blood clot, in her left leg, “My left leg was killing me. It kept getting worse and worse,” she said.
Basara never completely understood why it happened to her. Aside from pregnancy, she had no risk factors nor a hereditary predisposition. A fear of having another DVT never left her mind. She said her left leg never felt normal.
That has all changed thanks to a happenstance conversation with Dr. Kurtis Kim while working on a story at Mercy Medical Center.
“When you and I talked about your symptoms and your left leg, I fairly was certain you probably, most likely have May-Thurner-related DVT, and the symptoms that are coming with it,” Kim said.
May-Thurner Syndrome is a condition where the right iliac artery, located in the pelvis, crosses over the left iliac vein too closely, compressing the vein and stifling blood flow to the left leg, which can cause DVT. Doctors are now discovering a lot more about May-Thurner Syndrome, including surgery to fix it.
