Miranda July Career
July began writing plays at a young age, with one of her first being “The Lifers”, a play she wrote and directed. Later on, she enrolled in UC Santa Cruz but dropped out of school in her sophomore year. She then got into performance art, or “one-woman shows” and she was successful at it.
July began her career in films in the riot grrl scene. Soon after her involvement with the scene, she launched a project to bring together as many women artists as possible. From the women’s first short film. July compiled a videotape of their short film and nine others to form a “chain letter tape” that was first called Big Miss Moviola and was released in 1995. It was renamed to Joanie4Jackie.
Her first film is known as Atlanta, and it appears on the second tape of the series. She ran the project from 1995 till 2003 when she handed it over to Bard College’s film department. In 2004, July was included in the “25 New Faces of Indie Film” list by Filmmaker Magazine.
She also won a slot in a Sundance workshop and decided to develop her first feature-length film. It was known as Me and You and Everyone We Know, and it opened in 2005. It was a successful film and it won her a Caméra d’Or prize in 2005 at The Cannes Festival.
