Miss Mykie Early Music Interests
Miss Mykie began to take an interest in music at the age of thirteen, in the hopes of becoming a singer-songwriter. She even formed an all-girl group while she was a freshman in high school. She recalls, “My dad and brother built a studio in our house that I spent countless hours in.” Shortly after this, her older brother had become her manager and producer, helping her craft a studio album, which was eventually shelved. She began to perform regularly on local shows and opened up for famous artists such as Tyrese Gibson, Slim Thug, Sean Paul, among others.
After graduating from high school, Gray was accepted to Howard University in Washington D.C. a historically black college. However, in the middle of her freshman year, she faced a major tragedy. Her older brother was killed, a few days before his 23rd birthday, and this had a profound effect on Gray.
Despite the tragedy, she joined the Ooh La La Dance Line for Howard’s Showtime Marching Band and became a soror of the Alpha chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Gray graduated from Howard University in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, in acting.
After graduating from college, Gray taught theater arts at Gregory-Lincoln Education Center in Houston, Texas from August 2007 until June 2012. She resigned as a middle-school teacher to pursue careers in television hosting, acting, and music.
Additionally, she is also an accomplished singer-songwriter. In 2012, she recorded her debut studio album. She created an industry buzz with over 1 million YouTube hits. Gray officially became one-fourth, of the fourth set of hosts for BET’s 106 & Park alongside Paigion, Shorty da Prince and Bow Wow.
They were officially introduced, as the new hosts, on October 1, 2012. Miss Mykie Day And A Dream
Whether she realized it or not, her grind had not gone unnoticed.
Explains Mykie, “BET actually reached out to me, my manager got an email that they wanted to fly me out to meet and all I could think was ‘are you serious?’”
Flash forward to her formal introduction to the industry: as one of four new hosts for BET’s long-running 106 & Park, which had fallen since its heyday when famed hosts Free & AJ ran the ship. Mykie would be a part of a rebranding initiative to renew interest among a new generation of teens.
Holding her own as a newcomer despite the presence of “Mr. 106 & Park” Bow Wow, she quickly became a fan favorite. Her signature Mohawk was welcomed and emulated by young girls fascinated with her funky yet classy appeal. Though as she has learned throughout her career, change comes quickly; the major change, in this case, being, the sudden removal of the hosts some months after they were introduced.
Yet, as always, she persevered without a complaint; gracefully allowing one door to close in favor of another path suddenly lit up in front of her. “I just talked to Bow recently actually, everybody’s still really close,” admits Mykie, quickly putting to rest any rumors of animosity amongst the group.
Though she has no ill words for her time at BET, she also doesn’t dwell on it. Forever looking for creative ways to evolve, she came up with a unique way to connect with her supporters, even avoiding a turn on VH1’s ‘Love & Hip-Hop.’ Capitalizing on the new video-sharing capabilities added to the popular picture-sharing platform Instagram, Mykie would use Instagram’s 15-second video clips to create a mini show.
“I’m always on Instagram, so I thought it would be a great way to connect with my supporters. I don’t like to call people ‘fans’ because it just seems weird to me, they support me so that’s what I call them,” Mykie says. She adds, “I just wanted a fun way to communicate with everyone, so I used the 15 seconds kind of like E-News mixed with America’s Funniest Videos.”
Using YouTube as a platform, similar to what Diddy accomplished with his Revolt Network prior to switching over to an actual station, Mykie’s “The Tea” has now been fleshed out. No longer restricted to the 15 seconds offered by Instagram, she will instead be backed by a full set constructed in LA just for her, allowing her to dish on entertainment, music, and creative clips.
In addition to The Drop, Miss Mykie also recently inked a deal with the increasingly popular Houston-based “Boojie Hair,” launching her own hairline under the brand. Nor has she given up on her original craft: the music, with an untitled album tentatively scheduled for a 2014 release. While she was coy about the release date, she did reveal that a track with Future is completed and on the way.
