It was only when she went to Dereke Kobe Secondary School that people around her started telling her she had a great voice. She hijacked a performing band and went onto the stage, took the microphone and sang to a live audience for the entire Zebediela community, at the age of 10. Word spread and people started booking her for weddings, birthday celebrations, and local events.
By the time she attended Matladi Secondary School, she started experimenting with backtracks doing her own versions of her favorite artist songs.
Her parents, however, were never keen on the idea of her pursuing a singing career. She started pursuing music on a full-time basis when she got to tertiary and was out of the nest did.

Mmatema Moremi on love, acting and more
I feel very blessed, Mmatema says
A few weeks ago singer and now actress Mmatema Moremi made media reports about ‘blessing’ herself with a new car, DRUM caught with Mmatema to talk about the ‘blessing’ her new single Ke Lerato, music, acting, love and more
So you made a few headlines recently on buying a car?
Mmatema Moremi: Hahahaha I know, I was surprised about that because I did not buy the car but God is watching I’m sure mine is coming.
So if you didn’t buy that car, did someone get it for you?
Mmatema Moremi: Not at all. I was fortunate enough to be invited by BMW and MINI Leo Haese Centurion for their ride & drive campaign. Where myself and a number of other invited guests got the opportunity to test drive their new cars on a lovely drive to The Valley Lodge in Magaliesburg. During your drive to the Magaliesburg, there where a number of stops along the way for us to swap cars so that we all get a feel for the different vehicles. It was a lot of fun.
You have a new song Ke Lerato, tell us a bit about it?
Mmatema Moremi: Ke Lerato means “It Is Love” which is written in my home language Sepedi. I felt that it was important for me to share the message on love because we use that word often but do we ever take a moment to reflect on its actually meaning.
With everything taking place in our country right now this is the time that we should be spreading love more then ever.
Mmatema Moremi: I was having a conversation with my producer Tshepo Gavu who suggested I write a song about love , at first I was hesitant but when he played the melody for me the scripture from the bible verse in 1 Corinthians 13 came to my heart and that’s how the process of the song came about.
You had your first acting role recently, what was that experience like and what did you learn?
Mmatema Moremi: Playing Thembi on Bone of my bones was a great experience. I am truly thankful to God for blessing me with the gift. I am also thankful to the production team that trusted me with a role of that magnitude especially since I am not a trained actress yet they took a leap of faith and cast me.
What have been your challenges in the entertainment industry and how have you maneuvered through them?
Mmatema Moremi: Because I am born again and a Christian, some people don’t understand why I am featured on circular songs. I constantly have to explain that I am an artist and have the ability to communicate and write in different genres of music.
What’s the best thing about fame for you and what’s the worst?
Mmatema Moremi: The best thing about being well known is having the ability to touch people’s hearts & souls. The worse thing about being well know is the consistent judgment & scrutiny.
Is Mmatema seeing anyone?
Mmatema Moremi: My first crush is Jesus followed by the awesome men in my life who are my father and brother.

The ex-Idols SA contestant is always looking for new challenges The 2015 Idols SA runner-up has been fighting to cement her name and presence in the entertainment industry and trying to avoid the trap of the “fleeting fame” that usually follows former Idols singers.
She announced that she’ll be hosting a new gospel show called Gospel Unplugged and told TshisaLIVE all about it.
“I feel really blessed to be part of this show‚ considering it’s a brand new show and nothing will be compared to it and I’ll not be compared to any other presenter. I’ve been doing my show on One Gospel every New Year’s Eve but this one is big because it will be playing every Sunday.”
Mmatema explained that her short stint on One Gospel’s New Year’s Eve show was all she needed as she just received the call that she’s been chosen as the host.
“One of the things I wanted to do outside music was act and present. I got a role to act on SABC 2 alongside Aubrey Pooe‚ Warren Masemola and many great actors. That role really did open my mind and made me believe I can now do anything. I’ve always wanted to present‚” she told TshisaLIVE.
Taking a similar route to that of Khaya Mthethwa‚ who went from church‚ to Idols‚ to TV then back to church again‚ Mmatema explained that it was all about embracing the gift of versatility.
“I’ve been blessed with the gift of versatility and I do not limit myself to one genre. My album is titled Love Praise Worship it has songs for everyone and that is what I believe in.”
