In August 2011-May to 2013 she worked at the weathercaster/MMJ where she built her own graphics for her weather segments. She wrote and edited news and weather stories to air live. From August 2014 to date she works at KTSM Tv as a morning Meteorology where she is responsible for producing weather segments, building weather graphics for the morning shows, contributing weather stories, as well as writing and editing packages on occasion.
“I grew up wanting nothing more than to be part of the journalism field,” she said. “From writing stories that involve the community from sharing my passion for meteorology, I found my niche in the KTSM 9 News Family.”
“The opportunity to write feature stories about the community, while keeping an eye on El Paso’s weather came true for me,” Monica said. “I went on to become a certified Meteorologist through the Mississippi State University Meteorology Program, and am now working on my National Weather Association Seal.”
Cortez loves getting involved with the community every chance she gets and spreads the enthusiasm for doing a job she loves. Her favorite story that she has ever worked on was a story highlighting the dangers of lightning during a thunderstorm. But, what was special about this story for her, was being able to highlight the beautiful photography of one El Pasoan. She was able to stay safe while shooting Mother Nature’s fury during a thunderstorm. Cortez admitted she enjoyed putting that story together.
