Nanette Barragán (Nanette Diaz Barragán) is an American attorney and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for California’s 44th congressional district since 2017. Nanette Barragán is a member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as the Hermosa Beach City Councillor from 2013 to 2015.

Nanette Barragán started her political career with the Clinton White House in the Office of Public Liaison doing African American outreach and served as the facilitator between the President and African American organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

After Hurricane Katrina, Nanette Barragán and her colleague Blake Megdal flew to Biloxi, Mississippi to provide pro bono assistance to victims of the hurricane concerning insurance claims. Nanette Barragán also served as a child advocate and was the Spanish-speaking adoption attorney for low-income families seeking adoptions.

Nanette Barragan takes pride in offering internship opportunities available in both San Pedro and Washington D.C. throughout the year on a rolling basis. The 2019 applications are closed at this time. Winter 2020 and Spring 2020 applications are now open and will be considered on a rolling basis.

In Washington, D.C. office, and District office, the internships run throughout the fall, winter, spring or summer semesters/quarters for college students. By working with full-time staff, our interns gain a comprehensive knowledge of Capitol Hill, as well as valuable office experience.

During your time in our Washington D.C office, you will conduct legislative research, attend committee hearings, interact with constituents, and learn the day-to-day operations of a Congressional office.

During your time in our San Pedro office, you will interact with constituents, conduct research, attend community events, and assist on special projects relevant to the district. Hours may be flexible to accommodate students’ hectic course schedules, but generally, run 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

Nanette Environment

Nanette Barragan understands that climate change is an urgent environmental problem and she intends to act accordingly. She will fight to combat climate change and work to transition us to clean renewable energy.

My district is one of the most polluted districts in the nation, where the sight of refineries and urban oil wells next to homes and baseball fields are a common occurrence. Unfortunately, this is a normal communities color, which routinely endures immense environmental injustices.

It takes immense strength to fight polluted air and water in places where the contamination is profound and the injustices are deep. Due to limited resources and lack of political power, communities of color are often where you will find industrial facilities and air and water contamination.

Members of Congress, as well as environmental justice activists from all parts of the country, must unite to both increase awareness and pursue policy change. A clean environment is about more than environmentalism.

It’s about breathing in clean air and drinking uncontaminated water. It’s about new technologies and creating new jobs for the 21st century. Instead of risking the public health of the frontline communities across the country.

We should be focused on transitioning to a clean energy economy by electrifying our transportation system and ramping up our use of renewables. We can’t have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness unless you also have environmental justice. These issues go to the core of who we are as a nation.

Foreign Affairs

America’s role in the global stage has become increasingly important over the years. We continue to maintain our presence as a world leader thanks to the efforts of our men and women in uniform. Unfortunately, we have lost too many of these courageous fighters to unnecessary wars.

Congress needs to pledge to uphold America’s presence internationally while striving for diplomacy and peace by restricting the use of military force in order to save American lives and taxpayer dollars.

A robust foreign policy plan can benefit Americans domestically, by ensuring American lives are secure. We also need to provide support for our democratic allies in key regions, such as Israel.
