Narciso Rodriguez Biography
Narciso Rodriguez is a Cuban-American Fashion designer who is best known for his women’s line consisting mostly of fragrances but also involves other clothing. Besides women’s clothing and accessories, Narciso also started producing men’s products a while back.
Rodriguez’s shows remained hits for spring 2004 and fall-winter 2004, with fitted dresses and corset details inspired by his trip to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His fashion shows became the ones that everyone looked forward to during fashion week. The high profile of his shows was heightened by the number of big names in the audience. Critics noted that he stuck with the same basic styles and fabrics with different color palates over the years. This led some to ask why he did not try to innovate more, though others understood that Rodriguez stuck with what worked.

Narciso Rodriguez Designer
At first, Narciso started as a freelance designer. He did some freelance design work for some time in New York then moved on to become the Women’s Design Director for the Anne Klein label. After that, he moved on to work for Calvin Klein. He launched his label in 1997. After some time, he started getting more exposure after designing the wedding dress for Carolyn Bassette, a fellow employee at Calvin Klein, for her marriage with John F. Kennedy, Jr.
By 2006, Narciso, in partnership with his label’s manufacturer, Aeffe, had a debt of over US$ 1 million. This was the total debt he owed his suppliers. To manage to launch his spring collection, he received fabric donations. The year after, Liz Claiborne acquired a 50% interest in the Narciso Rodriguez label. He, however, acquired back the interest for US$12 million.
Over the years, Narciso Rodrigues has dressed several notable characters most notably Michelle Obama on the 4th of November 2008. Michelle Obama wore the dress from Narciso’s Spring 2009 collection in the “Stress Relief” design collection while appearing for the first time as with her husband as president-elect of the United States. With this, Narciso received substantial attention from the press.
Narciso has been noted to have been a strong supporter in the fashion world of Barack Obama’s campaign. He also blamed a slowdown in his business on “this Bush mess”.
Narciso Rodriguez For Her Perfume
Young and very modern American designer of Cuban origins Narciso Rodriguez launched his first fragrances which have instantly become the hit in the US, and not only there. The new modern aroma is aimed at the modern and free woman, who is aware of her sexuality. The popularity of this fragrance (regardless of its unusual composition and a heavy character, and perhaps exactly because of that) is easy to explain because it reflects a desire of every woman to attract and seduce, and this fragrance has an openly sexual character. The unusual lustful composition is created with the sensual musk in its center, surrounded by orange, osmanthus, and amber. The base unites vanilla, amber, and vetiver. Intensive sharp scent with hidden and scarcely discernible densely-sweet nuance in the center later turns into a soft and balmy powder. The aggression disappears and the fragrance becomes tame and gentle.
At first, in 2004 it was launched as EDT in a black bottle in pink outer box. Then in 2006 the EDP was created in a pink bottle and black outer box. The composition was changed, although the musk note has remained in the center of the composition. EDP has risen note in the top. The trace has become more mysterious and rich, thanks to exotic woods – patchouli and sandalwood. Both variances of the fragrance can be described as floral chypre with intensive musk nuance, only the first one is sharper and more aggressive, while the second one is sweeter and softer. The creators of these fragrances are Christine Nagel and Francis Kurkdjian.
Narciso Rodriguez For Her was launched in 2003.
Narciso Rodriguez Calvin Klein
Rodriguez left Anne Klein in 1991 when he moved to Calvin Klein as a design assistant. He worked on tailored pieces in Calvin Klein’s women’s collection. While at Calvin Klein, he met Bessette, who was a publicist for the label. The pair became close friends. In 1994, Rodriguez moved on again, this time to Tse, an American-based company that created designer cashmere pieces. At Tse, he designed for both the men’s and women’s collections.
Narciso Rodriguez Shoes
“He always makes me look good,” actress Jessica Alba said of her friend, designer Narciso Rodriguez, at the re-launch of his shoe collection that she co-hosted with Barneys on Thursday afternoon.
“[Alba] always makes me look good,” the designer quickly added, pointing to the black and white D’Orsay pumps Alba was wearing for the occasion.
The actress, Honest Company founder and mother of two isn’t the only star who has a close bond with Rodriguez. The designer, who counts Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, and even Michelle Obama amongst his supporters, pleasing fans (both famous and not-so-famous) when he announced his return to the accessory design after a five-year hiatus. And the display of Rodriguez’s fall 2012 collection, which overlaps with the opening of Barneys’ new co-ed shoe department on the fifth floor, is quite a triumphant return to footwear. Think of it as a look back to the brand’s signature silhouette with pointy toes, multiple straps and, as always, a vertiginous heel. This combination of aesthetic ingredients doesn’t necessarily add up to a painful experience. At least not according to a red carpet professional like Alba: “They are comfortable,” she said. “You can live in them.”
Although for Rodriguez it isn’t exactly function-over-form, he does think about the woman wearing his shoes. “You shouldn’t have to… cry when walking around in heels,” the designer said.
Alba added, “Why put on a shoe that you have to take off in five minutes because they’re destroying your feet and you’re cramped? You want to wear your shoes all day, not just for five seconds.”
While it’s clear that Alba is sold on the collection, will his other famous fans follow? “She’s a beautiful woman. I love dressing her,” Rodriguez said as to whether or not we can expect Michelle Obama to sport a pair of his edgy heels. “She’s got her very unique style, so it would be great.”
And does Alba have anything in common with the first lady when it comes to style? “Narciso!” she exclaimed. “That’s the first thing that comes to mind.”
