Natasha was just finishing her newscast at work last summer when someone’s metal canister of hair product exploded.
When she went to charge her wireless microphone a short while later, Natasha slides on the liquid and fell backwards. Her back of the head hit the concrete floor “hard.”
She tearfully opened up about the injuries she suffered on the Monday morning newscast. As she said, she “truly had no concept of what was to come.” After she experienced extreme light sensitivity, weathering incessant vomiting and some short-term memory loss, Natasha went to the ER to discover she had a serious concussion.
“I was severely photophobic and nauseated,” Natasha explained in an on-air segment on KGO. “I had splitting headaches as though an ice pick were lodged in my head, that medication couldn’t seem to touch — all I could do was wait for hours in the dark praying it would stop, every day… I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be ok again.”
Perhaps most alarmingly, she couldn’t taste or smell. All of it compounded into a state she says was “very frightening,” and a stark contrast from a professional peak just a few weeks prior when she won two Emmys.
Months after she relocate back to her parents’ house while she recovered. Natasha is now back at the anchor desk with “new appreciation for how delicate, complex and precious our brains are.” Many people outside of sports nearly one in four, as NPR reports — have experienced a concussion; some who do experience one may not even realize it.
“It’s been a long road involving a lot of treatment and re-training — but with time and the help of a truly amazing team of doctors, I’m grateful to report that I’m doing so much better,” Natasha writes. “I grew up in the Bay Area and my parents watched ABC7 when I was little, so this has always been so much more than just a job to me. I am cleared and absolutely overjoyed to be back.”
