Nathaniel Crosby Biography
Nathaniel Crosby (Nathaniel Patrick Crosby) is an American golfer. He won the 1981 U.S. Amateur and played on the winning 1982 Eisenhower Trophy and 1983 Walker Cup teams.
He turned Professional but he had little success and he was later reinstated as an amateur. At the age of 15, he won the club championship at the family’s country club, Burlingame Country Club. His father Bing Crosby, stated after the victory, “Today is the happiest day of my life.”
As a high-level amateur golfer, Nathaniel won the 1981 U.S. Amateur at the age of 19 years 10 months. He also won the Porter Cup in 1982 and was also low amateur at the 1982 U.S. Open, finishing 59th. Crosby played on the winning 1982 Eisenhower Trophy and 1983 Walker Cup teams. He then turned professional in 1984 and has failed to gain a place on the PGA Tour. He then played on the European Tour from 1985 to 1987.
Crosby then turned his attention to the business side of golf, becoming involved in golf club manufacturing companies and also golf real estate. Crosby regained his amateur status in 1994, originally in order to play in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the tournament founded by his father. He then went on to play again in the Porter Cup and U.S Amateur, but this time without success.
He has intermittently been involved in notable golf events since his retirement as a full-time touring professional. Crosby also regained his amateur status in 1994, initially in order to play in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the tournament founded by his father.
Crosby played in the Porter Cup, the site of one of his greatest triumphs as a junior golfer in 2007. He has also made an attempt to qualify for the 2007 U.S Amateur. The 2007 U.S Amateur was held at San Francisco’s Olympic Club for the first time since his 1981 victory.
In 2017, it was announced that he will captain the 2019 Walker Cup team. Given his sterling amateur resume, and the fact that the 2019 Walker Cup was being held at Royal Liverpool again (the site of the 1983 U.S win), Crosby was a natural fit for the job.
