Nick Watney PGA
In 2003, Nick Watney’s first professional victory came at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial on the Canadian Tour. The next year he played on the Nationwide Tour, and after winning the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship, Nick Watney earned qualification for the PGA Tour.
In 2007, after two years of slow progress, Nick won his first PGA Tour title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. This victory took Watney into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time. He got his second tour win at the 2009 Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, with a one-stroke victory over John Rollins, taking him to his highest position yet in the World Golf Rankings, number 76.
In the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, Nick Watney had a three-shot lead going into the final round. However, he shot a final round of 81, which dropped him back to a tie for 18th place. In August 2012, Nick won the first of the four FedEx Cup playoff events, The Barclays, at Bethpage Black in New York.
For the season, Nick Watney finished in 22nd on the PGA Tour’s money list. In October 2012, after the PGA Tour season ended, Watney won the Malaysian CIMB Classic, an event on the Asian Tour (co-sponsored by the PGA Tour), with a final round, course-record 61. In 2013, Watney finished second at the BMW Championship, fourth at the Farmers Insurance Open, ninth at The Barclays and tenth at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and the Wells Fargo Championship.
For the season, Watney finished 24th on the PGA Tour’s money list. In 2014, Watney finished fifth at the Wyndham Championship and eighth at the Barracuda Championship. With only two top-10s and five top-25s, Watney dropped to 106th on the PGA Tour’s money list. In 2015, Watney finished second at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, seventh at the Farmers Insurance Open and tenth at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
Nick Watney Caddie
When heat stroke felled his caddie late in the first round of the CIMB Classic, Nick Watney’s wife Amber stepped in to help. His eventual win Sunday in the $6.1 tournament was a long way off when she volunteered to pick up the bag when regular caddie Chad Reynolds was taken to the first-aid room and put on an I-V drip at the steamy Mines Resort.
She isn’t a golfer and admits she doesn’t have a clue about how to read a yardage book, but she gave plenty of moral support when she heaved the bag on the 18th hole and walked with her husband to the end of his first round. Watney used a local caddie for the second round Friday, then Reynolds was fit enough to return for work on the weekend.
Amber Watney said as the daughter of a seasoned tour caddie, she was willing to negotiate on the fees after her husband won the $1.3 million first prize. Watney narrowly missed out on a 59 in the last round when he bogeyed the last hole. Perhaps it’ll come into Watney’s calculations when he’s buying her a gift for their second wedding anniversary, which is. Amber joked that the fact that it was only one hole – he made par on the 18th with her on the bag – didn’t detract from her contribution.
“I was behind the rope, watching the round. Nick just waved me over and said, `Chad’s going to go to the first aide tent,”’ she recounted Sunday. “I said `I’ll carry the bag.’
Nick Watney Injury
Watney, who missed the majority of the 2016 season with a herniated disk on the left side of his lower back, opened with a 3-under 68 on Day 1 at Innisbrook and was one stroke off the lead. He’s also two shots clear of Tiger Woods, who is also in the midst of a comeback from various back injuries.
“I feel like my results haven’t quite caught up to the way I’m playing. I feel like I’m playing pretty well,” Watney said. “I got some breaks today, drove it in the trees on the sixth, I had a shot, holed a bunker shot [No. 16]. Maybe I need to steal a few shots here and there and get some good things going.”
