Article Updated on December 8, 2019 By Josphat Gachie

Nicolas Paul Stéphane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa was born on 28 January 1955, he is a French politician who served as President of France and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra from 16 May 2007 until 15 May 2012.

Born in Paris, his family is of Greek Jewish, French, and Hungarian origin. Mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine from 1983 to 2002, he was Minister of the Budget under Prime Minister Édouard Balladur (1993–1995) during François Mitterrand’s second term. During Jacques Chirac’s second presidential term he served as Minister of the Interior and as Minister of Finances. He was the leader of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party from 2004 to 2007.

He won the French presidential election, 2007 by a 53.1% to 46.9% margin to Socialist Ségolène Royal. During his term, he faced the late-2000s financial crisis (causing a recession and the European sovereign debt crisis) and the Arab Spring (especially in Tunisia, Libya, and Syria). He initiated the reform of French universities (2007) and the pension reform (2010). He married Italian-French singer-songwriter Carla Bruni in 2008 at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

In the 2012 election, François Hollande, candidate of the Socialist Party, defeated Sarkozy by a 3.2% margin. After leaving the presidential office, Sarkozy vowed to retire from public life before coming back in 2014, being subsequently reelected as UMP leader (renamed The Republicans in 2015). Being defeated at the Republican presidential primary in 2016, he retired from public life. He is currently charged with corruption by French prosecutors in two cases, notably concerning the alleged Libyan interference in the 2007 French elections.

Nicolas Sarkozy age – Education

Sarkozy was born in Paris, and is the son of Pál István Ernő Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa born 5 May 1928, a Protestant Hungarian aristocrat, and Andrée Jeanne “Dadu” Mallah (12 October 1925 – 12 December 2017), whose Greek Jewish father converted to Catholicism to marry Sarkozy’s French Catholic maternal grandmother. They were married in the Saint-François-de-Sales church, 17th arrondissement of Paris, on 8 February 1950, and divorced in 1959.

During Sarkozy’s childhood, his father founded his own advertising agency and became wealthy. The family lived in a mansion owned by Sarkozy’s maternal grandfather, Benedict Mallah, in the 17th Arrondissement of Paris. The family later moved to Neuilly-sur-Seine, one of the wealthiest communes of the Île-de-France région immediately west of Paris. According to Sarkozy, his staunchly Gaullist grandfather was more of an influence on him than his father, whom he rarely saw. Sarkozy was raised Catholic.

Sarkozy said that being abandoned by his father shaped much of who he is today. He also has said that, in his early years, he felt inferior in relation to his wealthier and taller classmates. “What made me who I am now is the sum of all the humiliations suffered during childhood”, he said later.

Sarkozy was enrolled in the Lycée Chaptal, a well regarded public middle and high school in Paris’ 8th arrondissement, where he failed his sixième. His family then sent him to the Cours Saint-Louis de Monceau, a private Catholic school in the 17th arrondissement, where he was reportedly a mediocre student, but where he nonetheless obtained his baccalauréat in 1973.

Sarkozy enrolled at the Université Paris X Nanterre, where he graduated with an M.A. in private law and, later, with a D.E.A. degree in business law. Paris X Nanterre had been the starting place for the May ’68 student movement and was still a stronghold of leftist students. Described as a quiet student, Sarkozy soon joined the right-wing student organization, in which he was very active.[citation needed] He completed his military service as a part-time Air Force cleaner.

After graduating from university, Sarkozy entered Sciences Po, where he studied between 1979 and 1981, but failed to graduate due to an insufficient command of the English language.

After passing the bar, Sarkozy became a lawyer specializing in business and family law and was one of Silvio Berlusconi’s French lawyers.

Nicolas Sarkozy wife

Marie-Dominique Culioli

Sarkozy married his first wife, Marie-Dominique Culioli, on 23 September 1982; her father was a pharmacist from Vico (a village north of Ajaccio, Corsica), her uncle was Achille Peretti, the mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine from 1947–1983 and Sarkozy’s political mentor. They had two sons, Pierre (born in 1985), now a hip-hop producer, and Jean (born in 1986) now a local politician in the city of Neuilly-sur-Seine where Sarkozy started his own political career. Sarkozy’s best man was the prominent right-wing politician Charles Pasqua, later to become a political opponent. Sarkozy divorced Culioli in 1996, after they had been separated for several years.

Cécilia Ciganer-Albéniz

As mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine, Sarkozy met former fashion model and public relations executive Cécilia Ciganer-Albéniz (great-granddaughter of composer Isaac Albéniz and daughter of a Moldovan father), when he officiated at her wedding to television host Jacques Martin. In 1988, she left her husband for Sarkozy, and divorced Martin one year later. Sarkozy married her in October 1996, with witnesses Martin Bouygues and Bernard Arnault. They have one son, Louis, born 23 April 1997.

Between 2002 and 2005, the couple often appeared together on public occasions, with Cécilia Sarkozy acting as the chief aide for her husband. On 25 May 2005, however, the Swiss newspaper Le Matin revealed that she had left Sarkozy for French-Moroccan national Richard Attias, head of Publicis in New York. There were other accusations of a private nature in Le Matin, which led to Sarkozy suing the paper. In the meantime, he was said to have had an affair with a journalist of Le Figaro, Anne Fulda.

Sarkozy and Cécilia ultimately divorced on 15 October 2007, soon after his election as President.

Carla Bruni

Less than a month after separating from Cécilia, Sarkozy met Italian-born singer, songwriter and former fashion model Carla Bruni at a dinner party, and soon entered a relationship with her. They married on 2 February 2008 at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

The couple have a daughter, Giulia, born on 19 October 2011. It was the first time a French president has publicly had a child while in office.

Carla Bruni sends message of support to husband during formal investigation

arla Bruni has Instagrammed a photo of her husband, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, to show her support while he faces a formal investigation for illicit election campaign financing and misappropriating Libyan public funds. Nicolas denies the allegations, and Carla has publicly shown her support by sharing a snap of him smiling with their daughter, writing: “I’m proud of you my love. You are righteous, clear and strong.

I’m proud of your dignity against all odds and of how you always stand straight no matter how low the strikes can be.” Carla’s followers were quick to send her messages of support. Translated from French, one person wrote: “You can be proud of your husband Carla! As we are, we, who have always supported him… We are all behind him, with you, we are proud of him,” while another added: “Be united and strong, keep your head up… courage!”

Nicolas has described the accusations as making his life “hell”, and told the magistrates: “I am accused without any physical evidence,” according to the French newspaper Le Figaro. In an interview for TF1, he added: “It’s an ignominious act, not (just) a lie. I owe the French people the truth: I never betrayed their trust.”

Carla and Nicolas met back in November 2007 at a dinner party, and tied the knot in February 2008. The pair welcomed their first child together, Giulia, in Paris on 18 October 2011. Speaking about her husband, Carla previously told the Daily Telegraph: “Those people who think I love him for his power? Power? They don’t understand my psychology at all.”

She also revealed how committed he was to his work, writing: “So every day he gets up at dawn and studies for an hour and a half before work and now he speaks English with everyone. Completely fluent at 62, unbelievable. He can even understand English people with posh accents. He is very excessive and focused. When he’s working: voila, he’s working. When he’s exercising, he’s cycling 50 miles. He needs the adrenalin.”

Nicolas Sarkozy net worth

He has a net worth of $12 million. Nicolas Sarkozy was born Nicholas Paul Stephane Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa in Paris, France in January 1955. He is probably most famous for being the 23rd President of France, serving from May 2007 to May 2012. Sarkozy was a leader of the Union for a Popular Movement and has previously served as Minister of the Interior and Minister of Finances.

He also served from 2004 to 2007 as president of the General council of the Hauts-de-Seine department, as well as the mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine from 1983 to 2002. During his term as President, Sarkozy dealt with the Arab Spring and the financial crisis of the late 2000s. In 2008 he married his third wife, singer Carla Bruni.

He retired from politics after losing the 2012 election to Francois Hollande by just over a million votes. He more than doubled his yearly salary in one of his first Presidential actions. Vanity Fair named Sarkozy their 68th best-dressed person in the world.

He has also been voted the third worst-dressed person by GQ. He has been involved in some controversies including a book he co-authored arguing that people should not be brought up solely on republican values.

Pierre Sarkozy Nicolas Sarkozy

Pierre Sarkozy is the eldest of Nicolas Sarkozy’s children. His mother, Marie-Dominique Culioli, was the first woman of the future President of the Republic. His brother, Jean Sarkozy, is general councilor of Hauts-de-Seine. If the young man has studied law, it is music that has always attracted him. Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg are the idols of Pierre Sarkozy.

The latter decides to make his passion a real job. He then launched and founded the group “Da Cream Chantilly” against the advice of his father. The young artist knows that he has to prove himself, and he tries to hide his filiation to break into the middle. He takes the name of Mosey and works with Doc Gynéco in 2009.

However, their collaboration does not get public recognition. Pierre Sarkozy does not give up and continues to work in the shadows. He rubs shoulders with the biggest stars of French and American rap. Puff Daddy credits him with the flattering nickname “The Prince of France”.

Nicolas Sarkozy News

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy is to face trial for corruption and influence peddling, prosecutors say.

The case centres on an alleged attempt by Mr Sarkozy to get a judge to reveal information about an investigation into illegal funding of his 2007 campaign.

The judge and Mr Sarkozy’s lawyer have also been ordered to stand trial. They have all denied wrongdoing.

Mr Sarkozy’s team says he will appeal against the decision. He faces other legal problems over campaign spending.

In a separate case, the ex-president is accused of receiving funding from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

What is Sarkozy accused of?
In 2014, two years after being voted out of office, the former French president reportedly contacted Mr Azibert, then a senior magistrate at France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation.

Mr Sarkozy, 63, is accused of phoning him and offering to use his contacts to secure a prestigious role in Monaco for Mr Azibert, in exchange for the information on a financing case.

Sarkozy’s legal woes under investigation
The call – in which Mr Sarkozy allegedly used the alias Paul Bismuth – was wiretapped by police. His challenge over the legality of the wiretaps was rejected.

Mr Azibert is facing the same charges, as is one of the ex-president’s lawyers, Thierry Herzog. The lawyer is accused of helping Mr Sarkozy contact Mr Azibert.

In the funding scandal, Mr Sarkozy was accused of taking cash from L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt to help him win the 2007 election. He was eventually cleared.

What other investigations does Sarkozy face?
Last week Mr Sarkozy was placed under formal investigation over allegations that he received campaign funding from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2007.

He denies the claims, saying his Libyan accusers want revenge for his decision to send French warplanes during the 2011 uprising.

Mr Sarkozy also faces criminal proceedings over claims that he engaged in accounting fraud to exceed the limit for campaign expenditure in his failed bid for re-election in 2012.

The case is known in France as the Bygmalion affair, after the name of the firm that allegedly provided false invoices to Mr Sarkozy’s party rather than the campaign. Mr Sarkozy again denies any wrongdoing.

Who is Nicolas Sarkozy?
Nicolas Sarkozy, a centre-right leader, trained as a lawyer but forged a career as a politician. He was mayor of the Paris suburb of Neuilly, and rose to be finance minister under President Jacques Chirac, before succeeding him as president in 2007.

His term was overshadowed by the global economic crisis and resulting downturn.

In 2008, he married Italian supermodel and singer Carla Bruni. The couple had a daughter, Giulia, a few months before the 2012 election.

His re-election attempt was thwarted by socialist candidate François Hollande, making him the first French president since 1981 not to win a second term.

His 15-hour stay in police custody in 2014 – over the allegations relating to the wiretapped calls – was also unprecedented for an ex-president in France.

Mr Sarkozy sought the presidency again in 2016, but the Republicans instead nominated ex-Prime Minister François Fillon, who later lost to liberal Emmanuel Macron.
