Noname Music Career
2010–2015: Early works
Fatimah’s venture into music started from her love for poetry. Her interest in poetry led her to compete in local open mics and slam poetry competitions where she came out third in Chicago’s annual Louder than a Bomb competition.
She gradually turned her talents to freestyle rapping with friends, going ahead to collaborate with many local Chicago artists including Chance the Rapper, Mick Jenkins, Saba, and Ramaj Eroc.
In 2013, Fatimah appeared on Chance the Rapper’s second mixtape titled Acid Rap where she contributed a verse to Chance’s “Lost”. After a successful collaboration with Chance on Acid Rap, Chance featured her once again. Fatimah later contributed a verse for the song “Finish Line/Drown” from his 2016 mixtape Coloring Book. On December 18, 2016, Fatimah appeared with Chance the Rapper on Saturday Night Live where they performed their collaboration hits. This would later catapult her name to fame and on November 13, 2016, Fatimah announced her first tour dates.
Not only was Fatimah collaborating with Chance the Rapper, but she had also collaborated with other artists while still at her earlier days in her career. In 2014, Fatimah was featured on Mick Jenkins’ mixtape titled The Waters where she contributed a verse to the track Comfortable. Additionally, she was featured on multiple tracks from Kirk Knight’s album Late Knight Special in 2015.
2016–2017: Telefone
Initially, Fatimah went by the stage name “Noname Gypsy”, which she donned as a teenager when she was still transitioning from poetry to music, believing that gypsies were very nomadic, just not about staying in one space for a long time.
Fatimah officially dropped the “Gypsy” half of the name on March 18, 2016, after her cousin Ishmael Robinson informed her of its racial connotation.
She then took to Twitter to announce her sudden name change, claiming she was previously unaware of the negative connotations of the term “gypsy” and did not want to offend the Romani people. In a 2016 interview with The Fader, she explained her current stage name, following the change:
“I try to exist without binding myself to labels. I’m not really into labels at all, even the way I dress; I usually don’t wear anything with a name brand. For me, not having a name expands my creativity. I’m able to do anything. Noname could potentially be a nurse, Noname could be a screenwriter. I’m not limited to any one category of art or other existence, on a more existential level.”
on July 31, 2016, Noname released her first mixtape, Telefone, which allegedly took three years producing. Telefone was Noname’s debut album, more of a way to introduce herself to the world through songs presented as open-ended telephone conversations.
In October 2016, Fatimah collaborated with Saba; a fellow Chicago native to produce “Church/Liquor Store”, a song that openly explores the Westside of Chicago where liquor stores sit directly opposite to places of worship. Noname boldly touches on the issues on the gentrification of the neighborhood as well as the crime believed to accompany it.
Following the release of Telefone; Noname performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert on April 3, 2017, with the video on Youtube garnering more than 2 million streams.
2018–present: Room 25
Fatimah took to twitter in August 2018 to announce that her second album, Room 25, would be released in the fall of 2018. Recorded in about a month’s time, Room 25 expounds on the two years since the release of her debut; Telefone, most notably her move from Chicago to Los Angeles and an intense, short-lived relationship.
Fatimah compared her maturity on Room 25 to Telefone, saying “Telefone was a very PG record because I was very PG. I just hadn’t had sex.” Unlike Telefone, Room 25 was created due to a financial obligation. Noname once said in an interview, “It came to a point where it was, like, I needed to make an album because I need to pay my rent. I could’ve done another Telefone tour, but I can’t play those songs anymore. Like, I could, but I physically hate it because I’ve just been playing them for so long.” Noname paid for Room 25 entirely by herself using the funds that she had acquired from touring as well as guest appearances on projects that she had done with Chance the Rapper.
Room 25 was released on September 14, 2018, and upon release, it also received universal acclaim from music critics. El Hunt of NME described the album as “flawless”, adding that it is “smartly constructed and laced with intricate subtlety.”
M. Oliver of PopMatters proclaimed the album to be “vintage neo-soul and future rap hand in hand; a soulful sanctuary for those turned off by the austerity of mainstream mumble rap”.
Noname Stephen Colbert
On October 17, 2018, Fatimah was invited to perform at The Late Night Show With Stephen Colbert where she performed a three song medley of “Blaxploitation,” “Prayer Song,” and “Don’t Forget About Me” from the album Room 25 in her solo television debut on television.
Noname Influences
Both Musically and stylistically, Fatimah has credited her influences coming from the singers Nina Simone, Avril Lavigne and rappers Kanye West, Andre 3000, and Missy Elliott. She also mentions the author Toni Morrison and poet Patricia Smith as notable influences on her penning style.
