However, Samuelson attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he sought his passion for agricultural journalism. Career
Growing up on the farm Samuelson was anticipated to take over the family business, but a leg disease made it inconceivable to do heavy work. He thought of becoming a Lutheran pastor before choosing to do six months of radio school. His early work was based in Wisconsin, at WBAY-TV/AM in Green Bay, WHBY in Appleton, and WKLJ in Sparta.
Samuelson was heard on WGN radio in Chicago for sixty years as the station’s head agriculture broadcaster from 1960 through 2020. In May 1960, one of Mr. Samuelson’s first assignments for WGN was to emcee the National Barn Dance, a long-running program that WGN had just received when WLS radio suspended its relationship with Prairie Farmer magazine. WLS had altered to “The Station With Personality” and began playing rock ‘n’ roll.
