Lyman was born on 18 April 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Jill Larson, succeeded Lyman in the part of Opal on All My Children and went to the same high school. She made her debut on her first soap opera, A World Apart, portraying flower child Julie Stark in 1971.

Several years later, Lyman played the role of architect Gwen Parrish Frame (1976–1980, 1989) on Another World, and as Elly Jo Jamison, an evil relation of wealthy Orin Hillyer, (1972-1973) on The Edge of Night. Lyman acted in My Kitchen Wars in Hollywood and New York as a one-woman show based on the book by Betty Fussell.

Rise to Fame

Lyman rose to fame for her roles in the sitcom Mama’s Family as Naomi Harper, on All My Children as the original Opal Sue Gardner, on Another World portraying Gwen Frame, and on Generations as Rebecca Whitmore. Lyman’s most prominent soap opera part, though, was on All My Children portraying Opal Sue Gardner from 1981 to 1983, for which she received two Emmy Awards.
