Shacknai experienced his childhood along with his sibling brother Adam Shacknai. Adam was accused y Rebecca Zahau’s family of the death of Zahau, Shacknai’s then-girlfriend and they filed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit.

The jury in that civil trial found Adam accountable for Zahau’s death and granted her family a $5 million judgment for loss of companionship, and love and an additional $167,000 for the loss of financial support Zahau would have provided her siblings and mother.

However, In February 2019, Adam appealed the judgment with the defense arguing juror misconduct and procedural errors. Before final arguments were presented to the judge, the Zahau family and Shacknai’s insurance company reached a settlement of $600,000 resulting in the civil case being dismissed with prejudice and vacating the initial $5 million judgment.

Afterward, Shacknai tied the knot to a post-doctoral Child Psychology Fellow in Scottsdale, Dina Shacknai. Together they were blessed with a son named Maxfield Aaron “Max” Shacknai who was born on June 7, 2005. Sadly, Max was severely injured in 2011 in what was judged an accident. Max passed away in the hospital soon afterward.
