Merton was born July 9, 1957, in Parsons Green, London, United Kingdom to Albert Martin (father), and Mary Ann Power (mother). Merton lived in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham until 8 years old. He attended St Teresa’s, Morden, and St Thomas’s School, Fulham.
Merton then proceeded to Wimbledon College, a Jesuit-run secondary school that was once a grammar school and had just become a comprehensive. He passed A-levels in English and History. After completing school, Merton worked at the Tooting employment office as a clerical officer for three years. At the age of 19, he auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Merton rose to fame in 1988 for his breakthrough role as a television performer with Channel 4’s improvised comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which moved to TV from BBC Radio 4, he had earlier performed on the channel’s Saturday Live and emcee its series Comedy Wavelength in 1987. Merton remained on Whose Line until 1993.

‘This is me…Paul Merton’
Merton gave his one-hour South Bank Show special which overlapped with his first stand-up tour in 10 years, and ‘this is me…Paul Merton’. The show charted his starts in the comedy business, the development of his improvisational skills, the favor of Have I Got News For You, and his mental breakdown.
In 2007 Merton represented a four-part travel documentary, which was broadcast on Five, Paul in China. His second travel series, Paul Merton in India was transmitted on October 8, 2008, on the same channel. A third series, Paul Merton in Europe started broadcasting on January 11, 2010, again on Five.
In 2015 Merton was commissioned by More4 to present Paul Merton’s Secret Stations, a travel documentary series about some of Britain’s little-used request stop railway stations inspired by travel writer Dixe Wills’ book Tiny Stations.
