Richard has performed in many off-Broadway productions. His filmography includes 11 feature films and several made-for-TV movies and television series, including 8 years as Al Borland on Home Improvement with Tim Allen. The role of Al Borland had already been given to Stephen Tobolowsky, but when taping was scheduled, Tobolowsky was busy with another movie and the role had to be cast again.

Richard was a guest star in the pilot episode but became a regular cast member when the show was picked up by the network. Richard replaced Louie Anderson as the fourth host of the game show Family Feud in 2002. In 2006 he left Family Feud and was replaced by John O’Hurley.

Richard was cast in The Strokes’ music video for Someday in 2002. The video featured segments of the band on a fictional showing of Family Feud against the band Guided by Voices.
