Paul Anka started his career in music with his single “I Confess,” while he was 14 years old. In 1957, he invested $100 on a track offered to him by his father, Paul Anka, going to New York City, where he was auditioning for Don Costa at ABC. Here he performed what was generally believed to be a love verse he had written to a former nanny. In an interview with NPR’s Terry Gross during 2005, he said it was a woman in his church that he hardly knew.
The hit “Diana” one of his best selling songs ever gave fame to Anka as it shot up to No. 1 on the Canadian and American music charts. Anka, later on, released four songs that made it into the Top 20 in 1958, including “It’s Time to Cry”, which hit No. 4, and ” My Heart Sings”, which reached No. 15.
Make him (at the age of 17) one of the greatest teenage idols of the time. He went on tour in the UK, then Australia with Buddy Holly. Anka also wrote “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” – a song written for Holly that Holly recorded just before he died in 1959.
By the late 1960s, his career centered on adult contemporary and big-band norms, which he played consistently in Las Vegas. Paul also performed at the Araneta Coliseum in December 1961, known as The Top Showman, The One and Only, Paul Anka.
