    Patti Austin Music career

    The 1990s–present

In 1991 Patti Austin produced an album known as “Carry on.” She scored a top-five dance hit with the single “Reach”, from her 1994 album, That Secret Place (GRP Records). Austin was scheduled to be onboard United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, but because her mother suffered a stroke days before her flight she canceled it for an earlier one.

In May 2000, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from Berklee College of Music alongside Trumpeter/producer Herb Alpert and VH1 Chief Executive Officer John Sykes. In 2002, Austin recorded For Ella, a tribute to jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. In 2003, Austin collaborated with Frances Yip on Papillon III in the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall to benefit the Jade Ribbon Campaign of Stanford University.

She had a companion CD/DVD which she released, on featuring Austin and Yip’s duets of many classic Chinese numbers sung in Mandarin and directed and arranged by Carlton Liu. During a 2007 interview, Austin spoke of reluctantly attending as a teenager one of Judy Garland’s last concerts and how the experience helped focus her career. “She ripped my heart out. I wanted to interpret a lyric like that, to present who I was at the moment through the lyric.”

At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in 2008, Austin’s album Avant Gershwin won for Best Jazz Vocal. The album was recorded mostly live with the WDR Big Band in Germany. The nomination was her ninth in that category. Austin was co-producer and one of over 70 artists singing on “We Are the World: 25 for Haiti”, a charity single to aid victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

In 2011, she released the Sound Advice, and an album consisting mostly of covers. The songs included re-works of Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody”; Brenda Russell’s “A Little Bit of Love”; a lesser-known Jacksons tune, “Give It Up” as a tribute to Michael Jackson; Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me”, which she first sang at a milestone birthday for Quincy Jones; Don McLean’s “Vincent”, and “My Way”. The album also included “The Grace of God”, written by Austin after she watched an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show which featured a facially scarred woman.

She co-wrote and sang in “L.O.V.E. Let One Voice Emerge”, a non-partisan music video to encourage voter participation. Austin appeared in the Academy Award-winning documentary film 20 Feet from Stardom, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released on 21 June 2013. In 2013 Austin also sung “Practice what you preaching” in the Dennis Chambers’s album “Groove and More” produced by Lino Nicolosi and Pino Nicolosi, for Nicolosi Productions

At age nine she found her traveling passport to Europe with her Godfather Quincy Jones. With an immaculate voice and natural musicianship, she toured at the age of sixteen with Harry Belafonte. In the 1970s upon the generous recommendation of Valerie Simpson (of the husband & wife songwriting team “Ashford and Simpson”), Austin began to receive numerous opportunities to compose and sing TV commercial jingles.

Additionally, she became one of the most prolific session singers of the decade; recording with Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Jazz guitarist and vocalist George Benson, Joe Cocker, and Roberta Flack to name a few. In the 1980s she worked with the groups Steely Dan and the Blues Brothers. Maintaining her long association with Quincy Jones, Austin’s vocals were featured on his album and the title song “The Dude” which earned a 1982 Grammy Award.

Long since her first R & B hit “Family Tree” (1969), in the 1980s Austin had joined the ranks of a minority of women lauded for their songwriting ability and vocal expertise. She garnered another hit with “Every Home Should Have One” on Jones’ Qwest Label, and scored a #11 the UK hit with “Razzamatazz” in early 1981.

Patti Austin Baby Come To Me | Patti Austin And James Ingram

“Baby, Come to Me”, is a love ballad from Patti Austin’s 1981 album Every Home Should Have One and it was her duet with James Ingram. It was written by Rod Temperton. The song was released as a single in April 1982, peaking at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100. Several months later, the American soap opera General Hospital began to feature the song heavily as the love theme for the character Luke Spencer. It was re-released in October and reached #1 on the chart in February 1983.

    Patti Austin Heat Of Heat

The tight mid-tempo appeasing “The Heat of Heat,” is one of her best sides. It was produced and written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Around the time the track was issued as a single, the duo was enjoying the emerging platinum-plus success of Janet Jackson’s Control album.

The feel of “The Heat of Heat” can be said to be cinematic. An irresistible, stalking bass line is wrapped in an elaborate, soaring string section that recalls Lionel Bart’s romantic title theme of the 1963 James Bond movie From Russia With Love.

From her Getting Away With Murder LP, The Heat of Heat made it to number 13 R&B and number 55 pop in spring 1986. “The Heat of Heat” also appears on Best of Patti Austin [Japan] from WEA International.

Patti Austin Say You Love Me Lyrics

Have mercy, baby, on a poor girl like me
You know I’m falling, falling, falling at your feet
I’m tingling right from my head to my toes
So help me, help me, help me make the feeling go

Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down
And there’s not another living soul around
You woo me until the sun comes up
And you say that you love me

Have pity baby just when I thought it was over
Now you got me running, running, running for cover
I’m begging you for a little sympathy
And if you use me again it’ll be the end of me

Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down
And there’s not another living soul around
You woo me until the sun comes up
And you say that you love me

    {Bridge}

Baby, baby, hope you’re going to stay away
Cause I’m getting weaker, weaker everyday
I guess I’m not as strong as I used to be
And if you use me again it’ll be the end of me
