Simpson was born on January 30, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, the United States. His parents were uncompromising Christians and Simpson would go to church four times a week. Simpson went to West Anchorage High School and subsequently majored in English at the University of Oregon.

He joined the staff at WJLB radio at 15 years old, affectionately called, Donnie “The Love Bug” Simpson, quickly earned popularity with his piercing green eyes, sultry voice, and warm smile.
