Syria
Belden reached Syria in October 2016, where he underwent training at the YPG’s Academy. There he met other Western volunteers such as Tommy Mørck and Lucas Chapman. Soon after graduating from the Academy, Belden was appointed machine gunner on a makeshift tank for the Raqqa campaign and his unit helped to arrest Tal Saman in mid-November. In March 2017, Belden was appointed as a candidate for Rector of the University of Glasgow.
