Brown was born on September 25, 1933, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, United States. Brown moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey at age three and was brought up there, living in a small apartment building without a telephone. Brown, an only child, has said that his father, Charlie, who worked at the shipyards, was a “demanding man.”

He also attended and graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption High School in 1951. While he was in high school, St. Mary won state championships in football, basketball and baseball.

Rise to Fame

An assistant at William & Mary and Duke, an assistant with the Bucks, and an ABA champion as the coach of the Kentucky Colonels, Brown began broadcasting during the 1981-82 season when he teamed up with Al Albert on the USA Network after he was fired as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.

Brown guided the Colonels to the franchise’s only championship in 1975. Known for fostering young talent, transforming struggling franchises into playoff contenders, and educating those around him, Brown was twice named NBA Coach of the Year for his efforts with the Atlanta Hawks and thereafter the Memphis Grizzlies.
