Mayweather

Oscar De La Hoya announced in January 2015 that Álvarez and James Kirkland (32–1, 28 KOs) had agreed to fight each other in a non-titled light middleweight bout, though no date or venue had been set.

The reason the date was not set was due to not having an official date for the upcoming Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight.

In March, the fight was confirmed at the official press conference to take place on 9 May 2015 at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, live on HBO, a week after the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight on 2 May.

Álvarez successfully defended his newly won WBC belt against Ring Light Middleweight # 4 and Ryan Rhodes, current European Light Middleweight Champion.

Álvarez vacated the WBC title which he defended in the fight against Khan on 18 May 2016. Gennady Golovkin was promptly awarded a title by the WBC.

Álvarez won the WBC, Ring, and linear middleweight belts on 21 November 2015 with a unanimous decision win over Miguel Cotto in front of an 11,274 sold-out crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Two months after the fight, at its headquarters in Mexico, the WBC has awarded Álvarez the WBC Diamond middleweight belt.
