Clapp went to South Kent School. After completing high school, He enrolled at Williams College, where he graduated in 1971. While at college, Clapp met regular collaborators John Sayles and David Strathairn. Also, he studied at The National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in late 1970.

After college, he performed for three seasons with a summer stock and touring children’s theater in the very hometown theater where he started as a 12-year-old. The ’70s and ’80s found him in several regional theaters in the States, and Canada, developing a path into movie and television.
