Foreman tried hard for a knockout win in the 12th and final round and was able to break the nose of Briggs but could not register a knockdown. The verdict went to the scorecards of the court.
One judge scored a draw at 114–114 in the fight, while the other two scored 116–112 and 117–113 for Briggs in the fight, giving him both the majority decision win and the lineal heavyweight title.
In 1983, when Briggs was 12, he saw Mike Tyson in Bristol Park, Brooklyn, New York. Briggs’ friends called out, “Here comes Mike.” Briggs said he was too scared to run and that seeing Tyson that day “changed his life.”
