Jim Root Career

Root started his career as a guitarist with the thrash metal band Atomic Opera from Lowa in the early 90s. However, the band soon got separated and he went on to serve in bands like Stone Sour and DeadFront the latter of which he joined in 1995, and returned to along with vocalist Corey Taylor, during its revival in 2002. Jim worked as a waiter, screen printer, and busboy before joining Slipknot.

In January of the year 1999, Root m joined Slipknot, superseding their initial guitarist Josh Brainard, who left after recording their self-titled album, reportedly having fulfilled his recording duties.

Jim only recorded two songs during the album’s session which were “Purity” and ” Me Inside”, the former being featured on the short first pressing of Slipknot as well as the 10th Anniversary Edition and Latter being its substitute. As Corey had already performed with Jim while in Stone Sour, Corey Invited him to join Slipknot.

Although Jim joined Slipknot as a rhythm guitarist, he is regarded to be one of the band’s main songwriters and also has written lead guitar parts for Slipknot’s albums like All Hope Is Gone and 5: The Gray Chapter. Root was the last member to join Slipknot out of nine members which lasted between 1999 to 2010.

Outside Slipknot and Stone Sour, Jim has also emerged on Slipknot turntablist Sid Wilson’s DJ Starscream album The New Leader and John 5’s The Devil Knows My Name, for the song “Black Widow of La Porte”. Stone Sour made an official announcement that Root was no longer a member of the band on May 17, 2014.

Jim Root Telecaster

In July 2007, Fender released the Jim Root Telecaster. The Fender Jim Root Telecaster was a signature model of the Fender Telecaster electric guitar customized for American musician Root. In January 2010, a Root Signature Fender Telecaster was revealed on the Fender website, equivalent to the one he has been seen using on stage, as of March 2009.

The difference is the headstock. The prototype initially made for Jim came with the 1970s-style Stratocaster headstock. Root got it shaved down to a standard Telecaster shape. This made the 1970s Fender Telecaster logo go to the very edge of the headstock. With a mahogany body, a fast neck, and active EMG 81/60 pickups, it is a guitar designed for the hard rock guitar player.

Jim Root Charvel

Root had been seen using Jackson, PRS, Maverick electric guitars and Charvel, Guild, and Martin acoustic guitars as well as a wide range of effect pedals and amplifiers. Charvel was a brand of electric guitars established in the 1970s by Wayne Charvel in Azusa, California, and initially headquartered in Glendora, California. Since 2002, Charvel has been under the ownership of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.
