Television Career
Carver’s initial notable appearance onscreen occurred in the 1973 drama film “Time to Run,” where he played Jeff Cole, an environmentalist trying to disrupt his father’s nuclear power plant. In the 1977–78 TV series “Forever Fernwood,” he portrayed Jeffrey DeVito, the gangster husband of Cathy Shumway.
Throughout the 1970s, Carver made guest appearances on various television shows like “Emergency!,” “Room 222,” “The Six Million Dollar Man,” and “The Waltons.” He also took part in stage plays and made-for-television films during that period. Carver continued his career with appearances in films and TV series, including a guest role in a 1980 episode of “The Love Boat,” where he played the fiancé of Loni Anderson’s character.
He portrayed a killer in the 1980 TV film “Detour to Terror” and assumed the role of Lieutenant Vaughn Beuhler in the 1980 sitcom “The Six O’Clock Follies.” His later appearances include roles in “The Norm Show,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” and the 2007 film “There Will Be Blood,” where he portrayed Mr. Bankside.
TAXI
In the initial season (1978–79) of the TV sitcom “Taxi,” Carver took on the role of John Burns, a naïve student who ends up in the taxi business more by circumstance than intention. Despite Marley Brant praising Carver’s acting in her book “Happier Days” (2006), she noted that the character of John wasn’t well-developed, even with the addition of a wedding subplot.
Carver reflected on the challenges, mentioning that the writers were often figuring out what to do with his character amid the numerous personalities on set. He highlighted the competitive dynamic among the cast, mentioning instances where he and Tony Danza changed lines as per the directors’ or producers’ requests during retooling and restructuring. Ultimately, Carver’s character didn’t return for the second season.

Ministry, Bishop
In 1972, Morton relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, joining the Greater St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, now known as Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church, led by Reverend Percy Simpson. Morton became an associate pastor and later assumed the role of senior pastor, introducing Pentecostal and Charismatic elements to the church.
During his time as the senior pastor at Greater St. Stephen, Morton married Debra Brown, and they are proud parents of three children: Jasmine, Paul Jr., and Christian. Paul Jr. later achieved Grammy Award-winning success as a musician under the name PJ Morton.
Under Morton’s leadership, Greater St. Stephen witnessed significant growth, reaching 18,000 members in three locations by 1997. Morton also played a pivotal role in establishing the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship during his pastorate, initially within the National Baptist Convention, USA. In 1994, the Fellowship became a separate denomination after Morton and others affiliated with it were advised to resign from the NBCUSA.
Consecrated into the episcopacy by George Augustus Stallings, Morton continued to make significant contributions, co-founding the Joint College of Bishops in 1993. In 2005, he founded Changing A Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church in Metro Atlanta.
Full Gospel Baptist Church
In 2013, Morton announced his intention to retire as the Presiding Bishop of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship. Two years later, in 2015, he formally retired from his leadership position within Full Gospel.
What happened to Bishop Paul Morton?
Everything was going smoothly until 1997 when Morton introduced an investment plan for the congregation. Several pastors, inspired by the vision, invested $10,000 each to support the plan, aiming to bring modern banking practices like online banking to their members. While collaborating with a new fellowship, Morton, without thorough vetting, engaged with individuals he didn’t know well. Unfortunately, when the initial deposits exceeded $200,000, one of these individuals vanished with the funds.
Feeling responsible for the situation he had introduced, Morton was mortified. He began efforts to repay the funds. While his family, church, and the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship understood the challenges, portraying him negatively in the local media as having made a “bad investment” was particularly difficult for Morton. He took pride in having a good name and felt the pain of those who lost money. The situation escalated when the SEC started questioning him.
Overwhelmed and unable to cope, Morton experienced a breakdown during a ministry trip to the Bahamas in early 1998. Making unsettling statements to a local pastor, it became evident that something was seriously wrong. Upon returning home, he sought help and entered a treatment facility in Atlanta for a week. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Morton made a remarkable recovery. During this challenging time, he learned spiritual truths in a new way, hearing from the Spirit differently. Recognizing the consequences of his pride, he realized the need to align himself with God’s order rather than relying solely on his understanding.
