A cesarean section was necessary since Medina’s pelvic bones weren’t developed as much as those of a grown woman. Furthermore, given her age and the abnormality of the case, doctors had very little hope of the baby’s good health. Surprisingly, though, the baby was a healthy one with no complications, abnormalities, or disabilities.
• However, he died due to a bone disease at a relatively young age of 40 in 1979, but given his case, he lived a healthy life until his demise. Medina’s family gave their best to offer the two children the best upbringing they possibly could. They moved towns and resettled in a far-off village to avoid the prying eyes of the media, and Gerardo grew up thinking Medina was his older sister. However, he learned that she was his mother when he was a teenager. Fortunately, Gerardo grew up without any health complications, which many feared would occur due to the circumstances of his birth.

• Medina made a historical record as the youngest mother to ever give birth in the world at the age of five. Even though her case is a rare one, her pediatrician revealed that the possibility of a five-year-old getting pregnant is not entirely impossible. What doctors couldn’t figure to believe was how a five-year-old girl who supposedly hadn’t even started menstruating could get pregnant.
• The Media that sensationalized the news put more pressure on her parents to shed light on the whole thing. Upon questioning Medina’s mother, Victoria, she admitted that Medina had been having regular periods since she was just three years old. Howbeit, the doctors who examined Medina, Dr. Edmundo Escomel in particular, wrote to a medical journal called La Presse Medicale, revealing that Medina had her first menstrual cycle when she was just eight months old. Despite her pelvic bones not having developed enough, the doctors discovered that Medina’s sexual organs were rather mature and that she even had breasts.
• It was concluded that Medina’s curious case is a result of precocious puberty, which describes the phenomenon of puberty occurring in children at an unusually young age.  In some cases, early puberty is triggered by an injury to the brain or by a tumor. However, various studies have found that girls who go through sexual abuse at a very early age tend to go through puberty much earlier than the rest.
