Pam Dawber Career

Dawber relocated to New York City and began her career as a fashion model with Wilhelmina Models before transitioning to acting. During the 1970s, she appeared in several television commercials (Fotomat, Noxzema, Neet, Underalls, and so on).

Dawber tried out for the title role in Tabitha, a 1977–1978 situation comedy spin-off from Bewitched, but the part went to Lisa Hartman instead. ABC-TV, on the other hand, was impressed enough with her to enroll her in its “talent development” program, which paid participants until they could find suitable roles. Garry K. Marshall found her through this program.

Breakthrough: Mork & Mindy

Dawber’s professional breakthrough came when Marshall cast her as one of the two title characters in the ABC sitcom Mork & Mindy, which aired from 1978 to 1982, despite her lack of acting experience and having not auditioned for the part.

Mindy McConnell was the comedic foil and eventual love interest for the extraterrestrial Mork from the planet Ork, played by an unknown Robin Williams at the time. The show was extremely popular in its first season, ranking third in the Nielsen ratings for the year.

Her only major challenge on set was that she frequently found it difficult to maintain proper character composure in the face of her co-comedic star’s talent. In addition, the TV network put pressure on Dawber to sexualize her character as the series progressed, which she successfully resisted with the help of Williams.

“Savoyard”

Dawber performed in a Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance in the 1980s, which was based on the Joseph Papp/New York Shakespeare Festival production. Linda Ronstadt had played her role as Mabel in the show’s run in New York.

My Sister Sam

From 1986 to 1988, Dawber reprised her title role in a television series, this time as Samantha Russell in the CBS sitcom My Sister Sam, alongside Rebecca Schaeffer. The series was a success in its first season, but it suffered a massive drop in its second season after shifting to Saturday night. My Sister Sam was canceled in April 1988, with half of the second season’s episodes never airing on CBS, but eventually airing on USA Network (along with all previous episodes).

Robert John Bardo, a man who had stalked Schaeffer for three years, shot and killed her in front of her Los Angeles apartment in July 1989, more than a year after the show’s cancellation. Dawber was reportedly “devastated” by the death of her former co-star.

Dawber and her remaining My Sister Sam co-stars, Joel Brooks, David Naughton, and Jenny O’Hara, all took part in a filmed public service announcement about gun violence prevention, and Dawber herself became a gun control advocate. She largely retired from the entertainment industry after the birth of her second child for family reasons, appearing sporadically during the 1990s.

Film work

Although she is best known for her television work, Dawber has also appeared in a few films, including the comedy Stay Tuned (1992) with John Ritter and the period film I’ll Remember April (1999) with her husband Mark Harmon.

Return to television

Dawber appeared on CBS in the short-lived sitcom Life… and Stuff in 1997. In 2014, she reunited with Robin Williams on his comedy series The Crazy Ones as the character’s love interest. However, the reunion did not improve the show’s ratings, and it was canceled shortly afterward.

Williams, who was already suffering from Lewy body disease at the time, committed suicide later that year. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s national spokeswoman is Dawber. Garry K. Marshall, the film and television comedy writer-producer-director who helped Dawber break into the industry, died in 2016.

Dawber appeared on The Odd Couple in a Marshall tribute episode that year, alongside other Marshall alumni Ron Howard, Garry’s sister Penny Marshall, Cindy Williams, Anson Williams, Don Most, and Marion Ross.

For the first time in her career, she appeared with Harmon on NCIS in 2021 for four episodes as ‘”seasoned investigative journalist” Marcie Warren, whom Gibbs sits near at a diner.
