Boone began his career in Nashville’s Centennial Park by performing. Later in 1954, he started recording for Republic Records and in 1955, he was recording for for Dot Records. He did his own version of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That a Shame” in 1955 and it was a hit.
In 1956, Boone did a second cover which was a number-one single. The song was a revival of a then seven-year-old song “I Almost Lost My Mind”, by Ivory Joe Hunter. Boone also made regular appearances on ABC-TV’s Ozark Jubilee, which was hosted by his father-in-law.
In the late 195os, Boone won himself a long-term product endorsement contract from General Motors which lasted through the 1960s. Boone also succeeded Dinah Shore singing the praises of the GM product: “See the USA in your Chevrolet … drive your Chevrolet through the USA, America’s the greatest land of all!”
